A built auto will always outshift a manual. You just cant beat a properly setup auto. In an all out drag car, I agree auto is the way to go, but its just not for me.

Automatics are quick but you shouldn't be too concerned if you're a decent shifter in my opinion at least. Just get a cheap F23 or F35 and cryo-treat it or upgrade bearings, whatever you want to do money-wise. 6 speeds are going to be through the roof. I know KillaSS bought a cheap used 6 speed that's holding up fine with his 252 or 256 build so far but it hasn't been in long enough to really say if it's reliable or not. He didn't do anything to it either, just had ZZP install it the way it was.
Until you drive a race built trans with a manual valve body, up'ed line pressure, etc... you haven't driven an automatic.

I've been in some autos that really slam the gears. Faster than any manual ever will.

I've gone back and forth from all ideas 4.45 f40 and built auto. This is what I've decided.
Built auto: Fastest on the track, unsure about DD'ing it.. would be badass because no one does this route
4.45: shorter gears= less stress, fairly inexpensive. Poor mpg, faster acceleration.
F40: expensive, holds a ton of power, haven't heard of one broken yet, 6th gear for good mpgs.

I guess for a dd the best option seems to be the F40...

Pretty sure they don't off it with lsd, you'd have to purchase your own kit

That's a con of f40, I think there's a quaife kit for $1500 or something, it adds up

Auto shifts way faster. Then, you can run a transbrake, Launching is easy. You can't out launch an auto on t brake and you can't out shift it so it is tough to beat. You turbo guys would love it

I am in for more info. I am not purchasing one now but will be in the market soon and it will be good to get info before I do.

hypothetically, wouldn't lwrs work on the pcm open up the capacity to run an auto?

you don't run a trans brake on a street car and you don't need it to launch an auto car either

You know what's the best idea for a DD big turbo car?
A daily driver. In all honesty, you shouldn't even be considering how good/bad gas mileage it'll get.
A daily driver is cheaper and always a must when you've built something that doesn't belong on daily duties

Not always but for sake of this argument, most of us wont ever be able to afford a manual that does outshift an auto

Shift times / shift speed for transmissions including automatic, DSG, DCT, SMG, SMGII, dual clutch, manual, etc.

The fastest automatic in the world is the Lexus IS-F gearbox, at 100 ms. The ZF transmission in BMW's is at the 200 ms mark.
and if those dont count because they are paddle shifters then the NHRA Pro Stock manual transmissions are still lever actuated and are in the top manual transmissions in the world in shift time.

Wait for the manual, you'll probably regret not and they normally work out some issues with them in the first year even if their mainly just a Holden rebadged.

I was thinking the same. Maybe they'll even put the new LT1 or the old LS7 into it for a limited run. That would be epic.

Are we talking about an automatic for street driven daily use or a full race setup? I agree that the above mentioned transmission should not be included from the aspect that they do not use a torque converter but rather an actual clutch disc. However, if my Cobalt SS/SC would shift as fast as my e63 M6 with paddle shifters and can be driven as a daily driver I would consider it.
IMO, automatic has always been great for straight line racing and the manaul for the road course. I have seen many manually shifted transmission spank an automatic on the 1/4 mile though.
All preference. I prefer the manual over a torque converted automatic transmission. The manual is what makes the SS a fun to drive car.
