Question Octane Booster Effects...

I was just curious about a couple of things

1) Does it work?
I know NOS has 2 products out, one formula that supposedly raises the octane of one full tank of gas by 3 points and one that raises one full tank by 7 points.

2) How does it work?

3) If it works how much more hp and tq(performance) can you expect by running lets just say 100 octane with the octane booster than if you were to run just regular 93 or 94?

4) Can this hurt your engine in? I want to use it only when i go down to the track so around 2-3 times a month. I want my car to be my daily driver so i dont want to **** anything up.

Thnx for your help in advance.

its more of an injector and fuel system cleaner than better performance, it might help like 1 hp or something

if thats true than how is this possible.....

For maximum power and torque, the Stage 3 Turbo Kit will be the ultimate upgrade for your SRT-4. The Stage 3 Turbo Upgrade Kit (with and without Turbo Toys) boosts power to an awesome 310 hp at 5600 rpm and 325 ft.-lbs. of torque at 3200–4800 rpm. The Stage 3 Kit with Turbo Toys in high-octane mode increases power to an amazing 355 hp at 5200 rpm and 365 ft.-lbs. of torque at 3200–4800 rpm! The Mopar Performance Cat-Back Exhaust System (P4510461) is required to obtain these power figures.

Specs for stage 3 Srt-4 using 93 compared to 100 octane

Um, i tired the octane booster stuff, one of the NOS products. My dad bought it just to see what it would do. One the way to the track, i realized that i was getting about 40mpg going 80mph for about 4-5 min. I was like WTF? Then after a lil bit, it went back down to about 20s. At the track, really didnt show any difference. I wouldnt pay for it IMO, but i got to try it for free, so what the hell...

The Reason with turbotoys stage 3 , The high octane fuel is needed is because the computer is set to a more aggressive timing curve , and with out the high octane fuel it would pre ignite the fuel and you would get pre-ignition of the fuel ( Spark Knock ) .

By adding the octane booster to your cobalt , the timing stays the same so not much to gain .. Just my .02 ..

You are misunderstanding what a point of octane consist of. A point is 1/10th of an octane number, so if your formula was mixed to add 7 points to 93 octane fuel, you would end up with 93.7 octane (if it worked exactly as advertised)

Hardly seems worth the effort unless you are riding the ragged edge of detonation. I, personally would not tune a car that close to the edge.

Higher octane will only help with high boost or high compression situations. It won't really hurt it, but it won't really help either. Maybe if you used a smaller pully, but I doubt it, because the computer is tuned for 91, not higher. I could be wrong, but that is what I have heard. I'm not an expert.

The octane boost does nothing to add horsepower. The point of a higher octane fuel is that it burns slower, which allows it to better combat detonation and knock. In a "high octane" mode as you described the fuel is not making any extra power, rather it is allowing for either more aggressive timing and/or more boost. I always enjoy hearing about how high octane gas is more explosive and powerful when really it actually burns slower. Don't waste your money on it unless you need it.

I would never use an octane booster. They don't do anything at all. I would be just as scared to dump salt in my tank as one of those.

i tried using the octane boosters, then i figured i'd read up on it. Apparently a lot of study has been done on the MMT in octane boosters, gumming up everything, lost of fuel millage, not to mention MMT is cancerous in large quantities. I didn't notice anything when i used it in my car, but after i read the articles on it, i stopped using it all together

I was gonna explain the same thing. Seems that most people don't realize that is how the formula works. Even those stupid TV shows will talk about this stuff like its the greatest thing in the world.

EDIT: So don't do it. If anything, go to some paint shop, and buy a gallon of Zylene or Toulene (think thats the right spelling). Both have octane ratings around 110. Dump that into your tank to help out some. Should only be around $5 a gallon. And be ready for the cashier to ask why you need it. They have to. That stuff can be used to cut meth or make crack or something.

But that stuff can be dangerous. Its been said that it can corrode your tank/lines. So you might as well just buy a gallon of the highest unleaded race fuel that you can get locally, and dump it in.

Most of the octane boosters are jet fuel which is kerosen(SP?) it usually cleans the injectors and adds some horsepower, my dad noticed some gain in his 2500 KB avalanche but his takes a full three bottles to get the full effect.
