Porting your blower

Someone on these forums told me that they are going to be doing this. Any opinions...

Make sure you go with a reputable company like...http://www.stiegemeier.com/index1.html

because if done wrong, or if there is one imperfection it can **** your whole blower up, I have seen turbulence where the air is passed above the rotors spinning, causing the car to be thrown in limp mode.

May I just ask where you have seen this? I am curious because I have a friend with an 89 Ford Thunderbird SC with the M90 blower. We have ported his blower/inlet without any problems. We were going to take off my M62 and take a look at it and see what could be done with it. Is there that much of a difference in the M62, I somehow doubt a minor imperfection throwing a car into limp mode.

Thanks, Dom

I was working on it with a local shop here in Houston. After we took the blower off, took dimensions and what not they decided that for the price, the gains wouldn't be very good. I did not want to argue as I respect their opinions (they've done tons of Lightnings and Cobras w/ great success), so I decided to leave it at that. I still believe porting the blower would help out as more and more modifications come out for the LSJ...so I'll probably end up taking my business to Bob Stiegemeier.

I know JBP will do it as well, they also rebuild blown blowers.
but I really don't see much gain in it unless you open up your intake manifold as well

I'm typically synical, I went to a speed shop locally that said they specialized in F/I engines, the guy's eyes lit up when I told him I had a supercharger and was looking to swap the pulley. He asks me, "What do you have a lightning or a cobra?". I told him its a Saturn. He looked back down at what he was reading as if I wasn't even there. Some people in the speed business are still biased against small 4-bangers for whatever reason, which I think is rather stupid. If you are a true enthusiast you'd be interested in anything that's quick, doesn't matter if its a 4-banger or a V-10, I wonder sometimes about peoples' biases.

I just talked to them and they have 1 person with an ss/sc who has ported their supercharger and they are waiting for that person to get back to them with the dyno numbers and check engine light info. She said give it about a week and call back. Right now they are doing only stage 1 porting, roughly 30hp gain for around $350.00

mine is at stiege's now, getting polished as we speak, I plan on doing a before after swap, take off a stock blower stock pulley dyno and put the stiege's on and dyno again will let you know...30hp, dont think so but guess anything is possible...I figure 10-15 maybe 20

Yeah 15-20 sounds better and I think that's why she said roughly. Looks promising.

Anybody have a good guess on guess on cost? And how much hp would I get from porting the blower and opening up intake manifold? Is opening up the manifold bad in some ways?

finally back from the coater, supposed to get there this weekend for install, trying to get someone to cover me at work Friday....its tough...
Port is $695 with the polish and as for heat, I took a IR reading of the stock S/C after some bonzai runs, I doubt the polish will affect that much....we will see...

dont think opening the manifold is easy, with the laminova cores in there you have to totally disasseble the manifold and then port it and reassemble everything.... maybe a port match to the head will help a bit!

Ahhhh...this is all too complicated for me. I like to stick with the simple stuff like intake, exhaust, and a header.
Anyway, anyone care to explain what porting the blower actually is...

Oh I completely agree. I went to three shops who worked on the blown SVT lineup and two of them gave me the cold shoulder. One of the shop owners who will remain nameless as well as his business even had the nerve to tell me "Why would you even consider trying to make this thing fast? Be a good kiddo and use it for what it's made for...saving gas." I pulled $2,000 in cash (not like I was going to spend it anyway, but just for the sake of the moment) and told him, "hmmmm...well I guess I'll be spending this else where." Mind you that's all going into my savings account lol, I can't spend a dime of that. But anyway, the other shop was very nice to me and did take the time to do some calculations...it just turned out to be somethig I couldn't afford as they were asking a hefty amount for preliminary testing.

I'm pretty sure all they do is polish the blower no paint or chrome instead of being rough it's smooth as hell I doubt there is that much less surface area for heat to dissipate.

You'd probably be surprised how much surface area those microscopic imperfections in the casting provide. Kinda like a paper towel vs notebook paper... makes a huge difference.
