regular unleaded can cause spark knock due to shitty detonation of the air ful mixture caused by cheap gas, which can lead to engine failure. always use 91 or higher octane in any force inducted car!
i know somebody that runs 87 all day long and it doesnt hert the car one bit. i used to run 93, 94 but now that moneys tight i run 89 but if i get the lil extra every now and then ill but 91 one in her.
I put 87 in all the time. the only time I put 93-94 in is when I go racing. Just cant see paying the money for the extra 3-4 octain. and in the manuel it says use 93 octain for the best performance.

I thought we've had this discussion before...
As I recall from the last thread about this....
The Cobalt SS-SC factory owners manual says to us 89 octane...
Any stage kits recommend using 93 octance....

no it doesn't... it say you CAN use 89, but for best performance it says to use premium.
With the rise of fuel prices I predominately use 89 octane and switch to 91-93 about twice a week. Keep in mind most of my driving is done on the hiway with no noticeable loss of power or any other problems. I drive 134 miles round trip each day. My DIC says average speed 51 mph and 27.6 mpg.
You definately must use premium fuel for the stage upgrades which is why I have not put a stage kit in yet. Fuel prices will continue to rise throughout the next fuel weeks for fear of a spring fuel shortage (particularly on the west coast), refinery maintenance, and oil is trading over $61 a barrel.
