I've been following turbochargers for a long time now. But since im considering buying a cobalt ss/sc, i had a question about it. Turbos have the blow off valve which releases extra pressure and makes quite a nice sound. Also the sound of a turbo spooling is music to my ears. Now does Superchargers have anything that is alike to the BOV? And when a supercharger is active, does it make a sound of some sort? No, no BOV but it whines like a MO Fo and sounds super sexy! theres alot of sound clips on this site. Shouldn;t be to hard to find some. And welcome to the site!

Yeah, you definately can hear. Inside and out. Put an intake on it and its music.

it has a bypass valve rather than a BOV, it doesn't make sound, but the supercharger whine is unmistakable, you can definitely hear it inside and out especially with an aftermarket intake.

 

supercharger whine is the best sound on the earth. dont get me wrong, an hks ssqv sounds great but you only hear that during shifts, you hear the whine when eva its making boost....

 

I'd take the supercharger whine over a BOV anyday....god I hate those things...

If my grandmother was a little bit more deaf I would get one for her volvo just so the younger crowd might stop putting them on their cars

 

Does an intake make that much of a difference with the supercharger sound? I have a k&n intake in my cts and i love the sound it makes.

 

Yes it does , The K&N Typhoon CAI , makes the super charger sound alot better , Whines like crazy .

 

Ok great...How much more power are we talking wiht the intake alone?

You can hear the supercharger whine way before you even see the car, and with the proper mods you can even hear it after the car passes you, even over the exhaust. With the stock supercharger on the ss s/c you can only hear the whine at full throttle, so with street driving its pretty much quiet.

notice how the cobalt and redline don't make noise at idle, some people would get annoyed with always hearing that sound while driving, like with the cobra.

I Love It When The Sc Whine Like Hell

 

speaking of blower whine, i heard that if you replace the BELT ALONE with a certain kind of belt it makes it whine at idle like that, and whine lowder????

 

yo you have it just like i did. i traded in my 03 cts for my cobalt ss. i had rims system and a couple extra little goodies. it was a 5spd and i blew up the rear end lol. so it was time to get something that will handle the speed and not break.
GET THE SS. the supercharger whine IS AMAZING. alot better than a BOV that you can only hear under deceleration. At 1/4 throttle at about 2-3k i get a SCREAMMMMM.
