Quick question

So I have gone through 2 flex pipes on my downpipe. I am thinking that my engine is torquing it enough to put the stress on it. I don't think my engine mounts can handle it as well as say a stock car.

Should I do the ingalls torque dampener or poli engine mounts?

Where is the best place to go for them?

Thanks

Ernie

These things just blow out all the time..

Really, the best fix is just getting a aftermarket down pipe..

I beleive turbotechracing has poly mounts and the ingalls... Over the top performance has rotated mounts, which do wonders for your car... I would choose the rotated mounts over anything.

TTR should have both. Aftermarket DP would be your best option and pair it with some mounts.

I have an aftermarket downpipe. I should've said that. Its a Hahn. With an upgraded flexpipe after the first one.

I'll look into turbo tech racing and see what they have to say.

I've been through 2 flex pipes too, both aftermarket. Keep having to weld new ones on and it's getting annoying.

Reason they break is because the engine moves... Firmer mounts will reduce this movement and should prevent them from breaking...

This is one reason why Cavalier, civic, mazda owners get mounts.

I just ordered what turbo tech said. I also ordered the poly trans bushings. Actually, I am not hopping. the tires just seem to let go to fast through first gear. Pure spin. I am sure it will be a different story once I get my summer tires back on.

Current mods are

Stage 2
GM Touring
Hahn Header/DP
Cold air
2.85 pulley

And soon these mounts to help with the engine torqatation. lol I am sure I am going to need a new flex pipe cause we just rewelded the old one. It broke at the weld and my exhaust guy said he'd give this a try before locating the new flex.

I think you would have been wayy better off with the rotated mounts...

those solid / poly mounts have a good amount of cabin vibration.

Shortstack....You were probably right. I ordered the mounts and the vibration was ridiculous. I pulled them off after a little bit of driving. I did leave in the poli trans bushings in hopes that they soften up a little bit.

You wanna hear the best part......TurboTechRacing won't take it back. They are basically saying that I should've known. This after they say the vibrations would be minimal. Right....I felt like I was driving an airplane. It wasn't the vibration that was annoying. It's the cabin sound.

Epic Failure!!!

You sent us the following email:

Hey, I got an issue which I think may be related to the engine mounts. I have broke two flexpipes on my aftermarket downpipe. I believe it is do to the engine torqing when I get on it. I was told you guys may have a couple of options or solutions.

We suggested the solid mount... As did ShortStack:

There is no way to make a "solid mount" not have vibs any vibs... You are making the mounts more solid, which causes the engine vibs to be transfered through the cars chasis... Which is well know...

If you are breaking flex joints it is because the stock mount is SOFT and moves and fatigues the flex joint... Again you asked for MOUNTS to stop movement...

Rotated mounts are soft, which are another choice, which we dont carry, but still can cause engine movement being soft... You specifically refered to "mounts" to prevent movement to prevent your flex from breaking...

You are correct. Your led me to believe that the vibrations and noise would be minimal. I don't consider F-14 noise minimal. I have stiff mounts in my other car and it is nothing like this.

But, really its cool. We can agree to disagree if you want. I don't need your lectures and I won't be taking your advice anymore.

If your flex pipe broke you would know. The car would become much louder. You may just have a exhuast leak. Common places are were the res meets the dp, and the dp meets the header.

Everyone has a different "rating" on vibrations... Read around, some say they are not noticable, and a few think they are bad...

That is a very valid point Sean, maybe his exhaust leak is not fixed... Honestly there should be no "noise" from mounts... Unless you hear vibrations?

Vibrations are a "feel" not a "sound" for the most part of reference...

Again maybe your exhaust leak is not fixed? Mounts cause vibs, (feel) not noise...

Ive never had my stock or aftermarket down pipe break or leak with stock mounts or ttr mounts just my input. You cant expect to mount an engine solid to the chasis and expect it to drive like a stock car. With any mod on a car theres give and take if you dont like the mounts sell them im sure someone will be happy to have them.

Yeah factory Flex Joints suck... They are not something you can "weld up" to repair...

Exhaust pipe is fine. We checked that. The minute the mount was removed 90% of the noise and vibes went away. The other 10% is from the new stiffer trans bushings. The vibrations I can deal with...the noise from it I can't.

Agreed!

That is exactly what we stated in a reply email to his request... Exhaust make more power, but make the noise louder; intake make more power, but make the "suction" noise sound; lowering springs make the car ride more "rough/firm"
