Question Rear Wheel Drive Conversion!!!

Well I may be nuts but heres my plan.
Graft a either a solstice or cadillac IRS with a alsin tranny of some sort.
Buid the LSJ to 400hp +
15k later ive got a baby corvette.
But right now im just day dreaming ill wait til its paid off and the warintys up.
or i could have bought a solstice but 6ft4in and soltice dont mix

well I can do most of the fab work at my dads shop so the biggest investment would be the rear end and tranny.

Don't ever speak that blasphemy about having a baby Corvette.

Well properly set up I would bet that it would go 1.60 60ft times on the 1/4 if it were set up right with slicks so i i think it would **** on an FWD cobalt.
But it would be a fun project, like I said before the major investment would be time not money

i dont see how the major investment is just time.... parts alone will be rediculous, and your going to need to drop major money into making the motor fit in the bay correctly.... best bet is to pickup a wrecked solstice and swap the bodys..... then drop an ls2 in the solstice

well i just did some reading up on that ls2 soltice that Mallet did.
They had to replace the whole driveline so that idea is out.
I think a vette rear end form a junk yard would work out and one nice thing is I should be able to keep the stock front suspension just break the half shafts apart and leave the spindels intact.

How much experience do you have with this kind of thing?????? Considering the Solstice is a different platform than the Cobalts, I don't think that swap will be as easy as everyone just assumes it will.

Some of us even looked into the SAAB 9-3 independent rear suspension, but turns out that's a different platform as well and isn't a direct fit with the Cobalt.

Have you also considered the amount of parts/time/experiance that it will take to get the rear suspension geometry correct, or at least good enough so the car can make a pass? You wouldhave to graft the suspension parts as well as the tranny and rear end, get a custom driveshaft made, cut a driveshaft tunnnel into the floorboard, reroute the entire exhaust system for propper clearance for the driveshaft.

Not to be a downer, but i think your going to need WAY WAY WAY more than 15k to do all of this....

Oh me and my dad build drag cars and some jeep stuffand I run the machine shop that we own. I havent done an IRS before but it would be fun to try.
I agree the sollstice is not event close to the same, and the level of work requred would be equal to making a custom setup.
Thanks for replies keep em coming.

Sounds like quite the undertaking!

Why not try to make it AWD?

I know that the fab would be huge on it, but an AWD Cobalt would be hot!

It wouldn't really be much additional work than the RWD conversion...gearing, etc. might give you a bit of a headache but once you've got the transfer case setup the rest is nearly identical. This is of course slightly over simplifying but you get what I mean .

Yah I thought abought that would be sweet ill have to get my car up on a lift and see how much room there is ect.. for tranfer case I would prefer not to butch up the floor to make it fit.
My dad says that I should get a base modle at a used car auction and chop that up he also said that the AWD setup out of a S-10 typhoon/syclone would be killer, but the trick with that is those are hard as hell to find now.
I wonder if the driveline out of a Lancer evo/ WRX sti would mate up I doubt it but ill do some research on that.

A better Idea would be to attach another lsj engine in the back and make it awd if your gonna spend the money that would be cool, and it would be super fast!!!!!!!!1

eh if you want a 4 cyl car converted to V8 just get an RX7, or RX8, drop an Lt1 with a blower and voila....the conversion for the RX7 is prety much bolt on, no welding required, some hamering and cuting but that's about it....by the time you custom fit a tunnel for the driveshaft in the cobalt, you'r looking at re-doing the interior etc etc...then you'r moving to a tubular frame to realistically handle the power...well shoot you know where I'm going with this...prety much build full drag car...so yea...dunno man...if I were ya, with your knowledge and access to your dad's shop, I'd custom build parts for it and sell them...you got any cad program you can use? make some suspension upgrad stuff etc etc...

Why not trade the car and the $15k for a GTO? GM already built the car you want.

HA HA HA! Thats awesome! If I were you though, I would move the motor to the back with the stock tranny and what not, so instead of a mini corvette you'll have a mini fiero, you'll save lots a weight with out having a back mounted tranny, driveshaft, and rear end, plus with the motor in the back, the thing with launch like no other!

Actually, The Balt would be bigger than the Fiero.
