Shaving the Trans Mounts

Okay, I installed the front trans mount on my SS/SC and didn't have time to do the 2nd so i held off on it. I drove it around for a lil and noticed that it vibrated more then ever.. I figured maybe its because its uneven and i'll wait to make any changes until i get the other mount installed. I figured if the vibes were gonna be twice as bad im gonna go back to stock. So there I laid underneath of the car and found that the brackets that hold the trans mount aren't really supposed to be touching the rubber or polyurathane.. they are only supposed to be touching the metal sleeve that goes through the mount. And i've bought the cheap ones from Cobalt-addiction that have the 1/4in lip all around the mount. So in other words my mounts are touching the frame more then they should be which is causing more vibrations. Thats how people don't have much vibrations with other mounts. So to cure this problem I simply crinded down the side of the mounts untill there was enough sleeve showing for the bracket not to be touching the sides of the mount only the sleeve. I may take some pictures of my grinding the other mount but i can tell you for sure when i installed the 2nd mount that was grinded ( i still have to grind the front) the vibes weren't nearly increased as much as when i installed the front mount itself.
I'll post again when i have grinded the other mount down some to let youz know if it really works.
Sorry if what i posted is long and confusing i tryed to explain it the best i could.

the vibes are less because you put the 2nd mount. believe it or not, having just one mount creates more vibes than having both. has nothing to do with grinding it down.

I got an idea from this thread actually. Drill some 1/4in holes in the actual mount on opposite sides to disperse some of the energy.

I dont know whats going on with all the "bad" vibrations people are getting with certain mount installs. I agree the Cobalt Addiction bushings have a much wider outer lip that would probably touch the mount itself but I dont think thats gonna make any difference really in the vibration...but it might.

Installed front and rear TTR mounts and the car is very driveable and not any really annoying vibration at all. The engine did shake like a mother fugger and dash rattled like crazy for first 20 seconds after bushing install, then settled down and all was good. The only additional vibration is only at idle and off idle but its a good solid feeling drivetrain feel now and nothing after off idle is even the slightest crazy vibration like others I've read about.

I was suprised by all the posts I had read before installing thinking it was going to be horrible vibrations and such to the point of hating them and wanting to remove them, but it is not.

As the pics show the TTR bushing edges do not touch the mount sides at all.

^^ exactly. it's really not as bad as people make it seem. people are just too sensitive, they want the added benefit without the vibes. doesn't work that way. but they're really not that bad at all.

so putting only a front solid mount is making my car shake more than if i'd put in another rear tranny mount.. i would get less vibration ...?

sounds weird, but yes. i put my front mount on by itself, then did the rear, and it was much less with both.

speak for yourself when i installed my mounts i got vibrations like crazy...

Yeah, see mine aren't like that... Mine are snug against the bracket on both sides... i wonder if the people that got the mounts like cobalt-addiction has are the few that have vibration issues. I have yet to shave them and see what happens. I think it'll shed some of the vibes. hopefully

MG]
i've installed mounts on my car as well as a few members. and they were never really that bad. yea, at first it will be very noticeable but they break in and mellow out. the only time i can feel them at all now is if i'm going very slow in gear, like going over a speed bump and leave it in 2nd at like 7mph. normal driving or even at idle don't feel them anymore at all pretty much.

that being said, they should get better after a few hundred miles.

I had the poly trans mounts on mine for about 2 days. Is wasn't to bad except when just getting started from a stop. But when I turned the A/C on and it sat idling at a stop the whole interior would buzz and rattle. Way to annoying for me even though it was nice to have them for the performance.

bro, they break in and get better. mine doesn't vibe at all with the ac on anymore.

it's a trade off. you can't have performance and a comfortable ride, if you want a comfortable ride you can only go so far.

I shaved the mounts and there was a difference it wasn't as much as i thought it would.
How many miles do you think it'll take to break in?

when i had my car it took about 500 for the first noticeble break in but i would say almost all vibes went away even with the ac on at idle took about 1500+ miles or so but that was a month for me so it went pretty quick and they just continue to break in more and more
