I dont have the LSD so when I shift hard into 2nd is it the wheel hop im experiencing or something else cuase when i did it again today it sounds like someone hitting my firewall with a sledgehammer on the passenger side

It's not torque steer or wheel hop that's doing it. That thud is your engine bottoming the crappy stock motor mounts out. Mine does the same thing on a hard shift from 1st-2nd gear. It literaly feels like someone hit the firewall with a sledge hammer. Get a torque brace, then poly mount inserts when available.

Is the torque brace the hydrolic looking thing on the side of the engine?
How does it prevent or lessen wheel hop? Is it just that the movement is absorbed by the hydrolic arms?

wheel hop i thought was created when the engine moves to much from a launch! so with the tq brace your making the engine less prone to movement , which in hand make wheel hop less of a problem! i had a single ironman tq brace worked great but now im gonna buy the dual one and put some tranny and engine mounts in so the only weak link will be axles until they come out with some!
My bro's SS has that LSD and i thought it was only good for turn but now i know im wrong because i drove it and in 1st unless you high rev the wheel hop really isnt there! but with dual tq braces, trann/engine mounts, strut bar, 1.5"drop your you'll be hitting better on the straightaway's then the one with the LSD (unless hes got the same ish plus it

Now i could be wrong but i'm pretty sure wheel hop has nothing to do with the engine moving. Many cars experiance wheel hop, 05 GTOs are notoirous for it as the 04, trucks get it bad. As far as i know( and like i said i could be wrong) Wheel hop is is a result/combo of low weight, sticky tires. or cars have a hard time planting the tires to the ground, whickh on a front drive light car makes alot of sense. also combined with that fact that the weight is being thrown back as the car takes off. Independant suspension is a killer for gettin wheel hop also.

Vehicles with Independant Suspension tend to get much worse cases of wheel hop than vehicles with solid drive axles. For example, the GTO (IRS) is hard to launch due to wheel hop, whereas the '02 Camaro SS (SRA) had hardly any wheel hop issues. Same thing with the 03-04 Mustang Cobras compared to the standard GT; the Cobras would get such bad wheel hop that they couldn't hook up until 3rd gear, while the GT had no real issues with wheel hop being that it had a solid axle.
The Cobalt has an independant setup up front, which would explain why it gets some wheel hop with a hard launch. Best thing to do to resolve the issue would be to strengthen the motor mounts and launch at a different RPM, where the tires will either completely break loose (avoiding hopping effect) or hook up quickly and get traction.
You could always go to harder tires...if they can't grip, they won't hop*.

Stiffer suspension would help keep the wheels from hopping.
The torque braces will help deliver power to the ground, and prevent you from breaking motor mounts.

This man speaks the truth... I don't know about yall, but my tires WILL NOT break free in 2nd gear if its dry... I get a little wussy chirp, which is overpowered by the giant slamming sound as the car hooks up and 205hp is throw at the laughably weak hydrolic motor mounts...
