Shut down procedure?

Ok i dunno if its been posted, but im kinda curious. I know this car isnt turbo charged but, do you guys after a spritied run to the grocery store or where ever, do you let the car sit for a min to cool off before shutting the car off? Im curious as if I shouldnt be doing it, cause i do let it sit for a min or 2 before shutting off the engine after spirited driving. Am i wrong in doing this?

Since your supercharger uses a separate oil reserve, and not engine oil, its pretty much pointless. The reason people say you're supposed to idle down a turbo car is because the engine's hot oil is flowing through an even hotter turbo center section, and if that oil stops flowing with the center section still at max temp (from a hard run), then it will burn and turn to carbon inside the center section, leading to a blocked oil supply, and toasted bearings. This is bad juju. Since you don't have oil flowing through part of your exhaust, theres no legitimate reason to spend 2-3 minutes idling down as recommended on a turbo car. Even if you did allow it to idle to cool down, the oil is still the same oil that was sitting in the supercharger case before, it does not flow from the engine.

To be honest, for the most part, coked up bearings is a much exagerated tale meant to scare people into spending money on gadgets like turbo timers. If you're using synthetic oil, and not going WOT at full boost up your driveway, slamming on your brakes, and shutting the car off before the turbo has even spun down, than you're not going to coke up your bearings.

Is that fact???? I thought they use the same exact oil? That is why it takes more then 5qt to fill up???

The supercharger oil is selfcontained within the supercharger itself. It does not pull from the cars oil at all.

Oh and the it takes more then 5qt to fill up question... From what I have been told there is an oil cooler on the LSJ which is where the extra quart of oil goes.

The LSJ has a bigger oil pan than the regular ecotec engines. The supercharger wont overheat like a turbo will, and there is nothing wrong with letting the engine cool off a little before shutting down. I'm thinking of hooking up a turbo timer on my SS just to allow everything to cool off a little. The heat soak after a hard run isn't good, but it won't hurt anything.

Even at idle, your supercharger is still spinning. (and therefore generating heat) If you want it to cool off quickly, kill the engine and pop the hood so you get some airflow. Of course, it'll still take several hours to cool completely.

Yes, but it generates very little heat when idling. The heat soaked into the intercooler system and the engine itself is much greater.

i would say no because when its at idle the temp goes up and thats hotter then just shutting it off

What I do if i run the car hard right before I am going to turn it off I will let it idle for a minute or two but I turn the AC on so the fans turn on to help get some airflow over the SC.

with the A/C on you car is gonna generate a ASSLOAD of heat... i wouldnt say that is advisable... no offence meant

hmmm a turbo timer would be a good idea....so my thought is it would help the lifespan of the SC...would that be right or am i way off base here?

The 2nd one.

Turbo timer won't do anything for the s/c. Really, letting it idle does nothing. It may cool it a couple degrees, but it will not be noticable. If you want your car to cool off, turn it off and walk away for a while. Whether or not you let it idle, as soon as you turn it off, the temp will rise slightly since circulation stops, then it will begin to cool. All you're going to do by letting it idle is waste gas.

actually letting the motor run a minute or 2 before you shut it all allows the parts to be near equal in temp , so they cool down more evenly

with a turbo car it is alot more important , but like said your not running full boost into your driveway , so its not really that necessary

if it was that important , the factory would have turbo timers installed , so that you dont have control of it

i usually let mine run 1-2 minutes , but im also shut the a/c off but leave the fan on the higher setting so that it dries the moisture off the a/c core to keep it from getting musty smell next time i use it

yah idk if a turbo timer would make much of a difference, when im in slow moving traffic i just keep the A/C on like others said to have the fans going and it seems to keep the engine cool, going of track though my buddy has a turbo timer for his 3rd gen eclispe and i dont know how many people have told us that his car is still running when we get out lol.
