Slippin Clutch/Driving Advice
Lately i noticed when i hit the gas hard and shift, the RPMs go up at least 500 before the clutch grabs. I know your supposed to shift at least at 3k to avoid glazin the clutch and i do but sometimes i like to coast in neutral and shift into gear. How can i avoid that when im goin 20mph? You cant really shift into first and second is way below 3k.
I do like to ride the clutch a lot, especially up hills. One time i was startin off on a steep hill and i revved my car up to 4k and rode the clutch and it smelled real bad so i probably burnt my clutch. Maybe that can be why my clutch is slippin.
This is my first stick car and i have over 3000 miles on it so any advice would help

The clutch is not your friend. You want to have as little to do with it as possible. If you must touch it, do it quickly and then leave its skanky ass alone.

Yeah man, our stock clutch isnt that reliable so it will go very quick if you ride it much. Practice on a hill for awhile. A loading ramp worked really well for me. Just try it on your spare time.

I've had mine slip on me twice and both times were about a year ago. Recently the clutch has not slipped but then again I've been driving stick for a while this car was just difficult to get used too.

As far as riding the clutch, like they ^ said, don't do that. When you're coasting in neutral and want to downshift you should slightly rev the engine up to rpm that correlates with your speed. Such as if you're going about 40mph and want to downshift into 3rd, then you whould rev up to about 2500 rpms and then slowly release the clutch all in one smooth move. This is called rev matching.
I think it was funny. I have one more question. is it ok to use the clutch and no gas to start goin or is that ridin the clutch?

I think you would have a really hard time starting with quickly letting go of the clutch and hitting the gas. Ether kill it (to slow) or spin/wheel hop (to fast) most of the time. If you let off the clutch from the point it engages smoothly when starting, you should have no problem.

the clutch in our cars really does suck badly!!! Like the worst ive ever had in a performance car... my mustang never slipped, if you did a huge burnout in first an only go up to like 5mph you could throw it in second and floor it again and it would light the tires again.... cobalt....not even close... Once i get the money im gettin the exedy stage 3 clutch and a fidanza flywheel...

Edit: And yes, you can slowly release the clutch until you just get to the engagement point, but at that time you will need to give it gas and smoothly engage the clutch in one motion. The "One motion" part is the key. If you want to let off the pedal slightly to find the engagement point that's fine, but when it's time to accelerate you WILL run into problems if you try to do so with the clutch half engaged and hold it there and then fully engage it. Remember, when you finally want to go, FULLY engage the clutch (Release the pedal) in ONE fluid motion with the proper amount of throttle for the acceleration you need.

I was just saying somewhere around 2500rpm. You can coast and shift into 3rd at 20mph without giving any gas because 20mph in 3rd matches just about decel engine speed (Around 1200rpm or so). I don't remember the exact numbers to tell you because I just do it by feel since I have the experience with it; just practice what the others have said, and if you want to downshift from a neutral coast match your rpms before you release the clutch.
