SS/SC Performance in Snow

Well the past 2 days have been hell here in Long Island, NY. We have had snow, hail, sleet, and freezing rain...which all froze into ice at temperatures hitting 5 below. I have a 2006 SS/SC fully loaded on stock rims and tires. I have been reading how horrible this car is in the snow yet i have had such good performance in the snow. My car has been driving through the ice sleet and snow like a CHAMP. I havn't gotten stuck once while coming to a stop at a light or stop sign. There was the occasional spinout but every car does that with 1-2 inches of solid ice or sleet under their tires.

I am very proud of my stock tires and cobalt in this weather.

Got the winterforce snow tires ( 16" steelies ) on mine and the past couple days with all the snow have given me no problems.

The tires BITE.

I drive 100 miles round trip each day for work, both on higways and backroads.

i wish i could say the same. yesterday it took me an hour to move my car 10 feet. from the street to the driveway. all my tires would do is spin.

When my car was stock, it wasn't incredibly bad in snow. It usually took a second to get it moving but then it was fine. With mods, it is impossible. If there is snow or ice on the ground now I am lucky to get it more then a few inches before it starts pulling me one way or the other. Now if I make sure and stop downhill all the time so I can get a rolling start it is fine, LOL!

I just borrow my aunts 4x4 Explorer when it snows or ices, just saves me the hassle of trying not to get stuck.

no offense, but i believe you really have to KNOW how to drive in order to drive effectivly in the snow. you have to take it easy and gas it very little to get very little movement over the ice or snow ur are currently on (if you gas it hard u will just dig urself in further) once u get moving just guide your car slowely...its really not that hard.

im not saying you do it, but i hate those **** that hop into SUV's and go flying down the road like nothing can happen to them.

agreed... i think alot of people just don't know how to drive in the winter... i've never had a problem with any car in the snow... i see it all the time.. people get in, floor it, tires spin, floor it more... which makes it WORSE.. then they get out and blame the car! no, it's not the car... it's the driver

So far I've not had any trouble out of my SS/SC. I drove in 8" of snow last week and snow covered ice here on monday. It just takes a little more time than normal, but its 1000x better than my z28.

ehhh. dont be too confident with those tires in snow. they are not made for it and when you really need to stop or make a turn they will not respond the way you would like. from my experiences, the pirellis were the worst tire i have ever driven in snow, but that's a given.

you will see a night and day difference with winter tires. not to mention, you will be a lot safer. I got stuck quite a bit and when i had to make a trip through a blizzard i had to go wayyyyyy slower than i normally would.

edit: and agreed with ppl that dont know how to drive in snow. it's frustrating to watch. i've lived in a ski resort my entire life. tourists and snow dont mix.

the worst is the soccer moms and dads in the bit suv's... everyone else will be going 30, they're doing 60 because "I'm Invincible, I have a SUV".... sure enough, half mile down, who flipped their car??

I live in the buffalo ny snow belt and i have to say that this isnt a very good winter car with the stock wheels and tires , if you throw a good set of snows on steel wheels then it would be fine i'm sure . Mine is stored because i already had a winter car . Ive driven in this area all my life so for those who are going to say i must not be able to drive baa, ive never been in an accident or a ditch for the last 16 years . The SS/SC might be fine in a few inches of snow , but when there is a foot or more on the roads like around here , all the thing does is snow plow with the front end .

when I had my Cavy Z24 I never had any problems driving in the snow. And like I said, when my car was stock, when I first bought it which was winter time, I didn't really have any problems then in the snow. However I have found that once you start modding the car and getting alittle more power to the wheels it becomes increasingly more and more difficult to get the car moving in snow or ice. Since my aunt offers to let me drive her car when the weather is crappy I would have to be stupid not to take her up on the offer.

And I agree, I hate people who think that they can get in a 4x4 and tear the road up when it is icy or snowy. They are the ones you see in the ditches on the side of the road.

I "KNOW" how to drive in snow.....I live in alberta....

I also know that your an idiot if you honestly think the stock tires are good in ice/snow.

Absolute. Idiot.

If you have a winter long enough to justify the cost buy some damn seasonal rubber and stop risking yours and everyone elses life on the road.

If your winter isnt long enough, please avoid driving if you can when its bad out.
and PLEASE stop trying to tell people our stock rubber is good in snow.
they arent. and you are encouraging people to do something extremely unsafe on your very incorrect opinion.

They are sleds. End of story.

isn't it funny that they buy these cars because they're "safe", but always end up being the one's that crash?

stock tires like to spin in the cold...even on dry pavement.

all you have to do is slow down and take it easy.

yesterday was the first time i got to really test out the blizzaks...and i am 100% impressed with them...i drove around all day yesterday, hardly got outta my car...i was getting through intersections that 4x4 trucks were getting stuck in. these tires feel like i have steel spikes in them, i love them they're great...never thought i'd get around that easily with this car. just have to drive sensibly and not like an idiot thinking you can race on covered roads

First of all, good job! you live in ALBERTA, somebody get this ***** an award!

Moving forward, i didn't post an adverstisement to drive the CHEVY COBALT SS/SC IN SNOW BECAUSE ITS GREAT AND YOU WILL BE SAFE. Where did you see any encouraging???

I was simply stating my opionion based on AN ACTUAL EXPERIENCE.

HEY EVERYBODY LISTEN TO THIS GUY CAUSE APPARANTLY PEOPLES OPINIONS AND SOMEBODYS ACTUAL EXPERIENCES ARE INCORRECT

LMAO @ YOU

You.My.Fiend.Are.A.*******.Idiot.

Edit: Last i noticed, most of the people on this site is:

1) old enough to purchase a car
2) old enough to drive a car
3) old enough to have proper judgement on HOW they are ABLE to drive their car

so don't come at me and tell me im encouraging people to do something wrong, people are old enough to do what they want to do.
