Standalone ECU options for LSJ?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a standalone complete replacement for the ECU in the LSJ?

FAST XFI seems to be one option, though not a drop in replacement. It looks like it is normally used with the ecotec distributor to replace the coil on plugs

AEM has a controller that says it supports the cobalt but I cant find anyone who has done it

Any other options to look into?

I spoke with AEM this morning. The only concern they had for their universal engine management system to work was the cam and crank signal. They have a solution for a 1 pulse per cycle cam signal and a 60-2 crank signal but anything else would require sending them a cam and crank signal trace to work out something custom.

It would also only run the engine of course. no door locks or other electronics but that's fine for me.

Anyone know on the cam and crank signals? A friend has borrowed my cobalt engine service manuals.

The AEM part number is #30-1900U universal

LSJ crank is 60-2 (58x) with a mag sensor. LE5 is 60-2 with a hall effect just as an fyi.

AEM EMS will not control an electronic throttle, you would have to retain the stock PCM for that, power steering, gauges, and possibly airbags and ABS.

Bigstuff3 will supposedly work with the stock controls, PCM/BCM's of the Cobalts. Of all the options they are supposed to be as close to plug and play as your going to get but it is also the most expensive.

Thanks, guys, I had not heard of Motex before. I'll look into these others and post back what I find.

It would have to support J1850 VPW and at least GM low speed lan to retain ecm->bcm functionality iirc.

Its been quite a while since Ive hashed over this.

Your and evo guy... have you checked out their line of AWD diff controllers? Pretty sweet stuff... and I imagine they'll have support for the EVOX pretty soon, as well.

Yeah we will be going stand alone on the evoX later this year so thats when I will start getting in contact about that. That would be the third car in the shop we are goign stand alone.

I assume you want to run this ECU in your LSJ powered Atom, so it only has to run the engine. No worries for BSC, airbag, ABS etc...
But to make life easy with the ECU's I would change to a cable operated throttle. I think the Honda powered Atom's have a cable throttle, so you can probably use that set-up.
Maybe change to a distr. set-up if necessary.

Yeah, it only has to run the engine

bigstuff3 replied and they said they have a cobalt race car with their ECU running it. But it requires "some fabrication" I'm looking into what that would entail.

I also got a contact to talk to over at Hydra EMS

I'm hoping to use the stock sensors, throttle and coil on plug.

cop is easy. a flying lead standalone is the easiest to work with. convert the tb to a cable set up. aem, or bigstuff is used in the drag cobalts. depending on which version of the cook book you read. i know aem can read the pick up.

Bigstuff3 says I would need a 24x wheel so that one is out.

You can always bolt-up the correct timing wheel + sensor to the pulley. (so outside the engine)

Why do you want to go stand-alone now? The tuned GM Ecu you had in there is not OK for your turbo LSj set-up??

I dont really want to bolt a wheel outside the engine. It would fully exposed to road debris.

I just want another project for this winter. And full flexibility in the ECU programming. Plus the ECU is too limited to SD tune and I'm maxing out the maf. So I either spend a bunch of money on custom parts to fix the MAF issue or spend money on a new ECU..

I spoke with a local motec dealer and his tech. He says that the M400 should work after we reviewed the sensors. It would need a custom harness though they have one available that is basically 10 feet of pre-labeled wires and connectors. So far this seems the best option. Probably the most expensive though.

Electromotive TEC3 here 2.2L Ecotec Cavalier....

Motec would be a 2nd choice, followed by Fast.

I personally would put a gm e67 in it. It will control everything you need, is very flexible and hptuners is adding tons of support on top of what they already have because the pcm is in alot of cars. I've used bs3 and the gm pcm has way more to tune on a street car.

Now that's an interesting idea. that's off the 2.4L LE5 right? Do they have compatible crank sensors and reluctor wheels?
