Strange engine noise

I have an 07 ss/sc and in the last few weeks it has acquired a new funny noise, I've narrowed it down to the timing chain side of the engine, and it sort of sounds like lifter tick, but it doesn't do it all the time, it's only done this 3 times now, it seems to do it most when the temper ire outside changes drastically, like the past few days have been rather warm for this time of year, and this morning changed to being really cold, and I'm getting concerned it may be slowly damaging my engine, any ideas? I would rather not end up replacing something in the engine or the engine itself

well if it's a tick coming from the front cover, means you're probably getting some chain slap on the timing chain... which means either your tensioner is failing you or your chain is stretched. pull your valve cover and see if the cam timing chain is tight. if that's tight, it's probably the water pump chain. if it's not tight, replace your tensioner and see if there's tension on it then, if not then you need a new chain. pull the water pump cover and see if there's any slack on there. if there is, that means you need a new chain and/or tensioner. one way or another, you're replacing something inside probably

Well it's from that side of the engine, but not right from the timing case, it's from about where the valves and lifters for the first cylinder is

Sometimes the bolts come off on the chain guides or they loosen up

yes and locktite. tensioner failed and black timing guide broke it a lot of pieces. had to get a new head for it because the bolt sheared itself out of it's threads and made the hole untapable

no, but you can stick a finger in there and make sure the chain is tight

a balance shaft retaining bolt on my intake side wiggled itself out and the water pump chain was not tight at all because there was no tension on it, car still ran but not well.
