Lightbulb Stroking any insight?!

Ok, lately I have been thinking about the LSJ and the L61.. They are basically the same engine in and out less a s/c and a few other things...

I have been wondering if it would be to my benefit if I swapped the crankshaft out of an L61 for the LSJ's? More displacement = more power right?..

If it were to my benefit; What could be the problems I could run into? I can not think of one as of now...

Supposally the L61's crank is rated to 600hp so that shouldn't be a problem..

I know throttle response wouldn't be as quick, but wouldn't it be beneficial?

Any insight? I think it is a very possible upgrade! I want to stroke it!!! LOL

The lsj's were de-stroked for a reason.

For fast throttle response, but if more overall power can be made by increasing displacement then stroking could be another way.....

Thumbs up

you would see a huge tq increase but you will need to tune the hell out of it because timing will have to be decreased, and such. sounds pretty cool

Yea, the exactly, but tuning would be a big issue....

Umm, you guys have HP Tuners. You should fine as far as "tuning".

Now, the thing to really think about is, how beneficial this change will be and (I honestly can't remember) if there is some type of crankshaft sensor difference.

Would the 2.2 Crank be able to handle as much power as the 2.0's crank?

Yes that shouldnt be a problem. Eagle also make a high perf crank for the 2.2l.

The LSJ is destroked to have a perfect bore x stroke square. When the two are equal, it makes for a stronger engine when boost is added to the equation. The longer the stroke, the harder it is on the rods. Take another 2.0L for example, the 4G63T. Tried and proven engine design.

Yes, they should be the same quality and strength. The 2.2 was rated by GM to handle upwards of something really high like 500 HP...something high where most people won't even touch.

Like CobaltPerformanceParts said, you can get the Forged Eagle Crank for like $600 if you're that worried.

It would make a nice 2.3( 2281 cc's) . Thats what you would get with the LSJ's 86 mm bore . The 2.4 has a 88 mm bore .

The 2.2s are 86 mm bore as well.

Is that why they make a stroker 2.4l kit for the dsm's? There are a ton of people putting out mad hp with the stroker kits for the 4g63t Yes a the longer stroke is harder on rods. There is a pros and cons to stroking. The tq can be worth it alone.

exactly!!!!

a "square" motor is the strongist of any possible engine "set ups" so to speek.

if you wanna swap the crank....buy a stronger 2.0 unit and do pistons.

thus you keep the benifits of the "square" set up and with your new pistions(possible higher CR if you want) you can make more power....and have a stronger motor.

I guess I am just partial to the LSJ being 2.0L but I would rather leave the displacement the same, build up the motor and make mad boost in whatever way possible to get more power. I just think it's really impressive how much power you can put down with only 2.0L and I love flying through the revs. Anyways, I just say this because the supercharger whine sounds so badass at 14psi that I can't image what it would be at say 30psi or so...but you're gonna need a different supercharger. And remember, no turbos! (once again just my opinion)

Well I don't mean to get really off topic but there are a couple of things I wanted to address...

1. Your M62 wouldn't be able to produce 30 PSI of pressure inside your manifold. It would be way past your efficiency and would be past the limitation of the M62 RPM speed. I don't know if you were using 30 PSI as a fictional # or being serious but just wanted to address that.

2. If you're actually rebuilding the bottom end, I'd hope you're porting the cylinder head and doing other valvetrain upgrades. With that being assumed, the more of a path for air to travel and more air to enter the combustion chamber at one point, than the less pressure there will be in the manifold. It's not always about how much PSI you're creating...it's mostly about the CFM.

Dude, you've gotta read to the end of the post. Also, 30psi just sounded like a pretty round number and usually when you are messing with large FI systems, you are going to want psi and cfm to be increased, even though the two can be inversely related. Anyways, it was just a broad generalization...

Yes, there are many pro's and con's to anything when modifying a car. Now it's wether you want to take the risk or not... I think it would just give us another option for more power...

Well if our going to go with the longer 2.2l stroke, you might as well go whole hog and go with the 87mm bore (the +0.03"), the +1mm intake & exhaust valves, replace the whole valve train, and port the head. I would hold off on cams though, at least until you got the basic tune down.

Too much stuff that requires you to retune the engine for decent performance could lead to explosive effects...
