What Defo98 said,

There's "SS Supercharged" which is a 2.0L supercharged engine and then a "SS" which is a 2.4L engine with no supercharger. The difference is about 35 horses.

If the car has a supercharger and just says SS then its either a 2.4l with the m62 someone put on or they just took the supercharged badges off...

To answer the first part of your question, GM made 2 versions of the Cobalt SS. The first "true" SS was a 2.0l 5speed manual supercharged car, specifically designed for performance on the track. The second version was a 2.4 NON-supercharged engine, which came either with a 4 speed auto, or a 5 speed manual transmission. GM claims they made two versions because they wanted to give people the performance aspect of the SS, with a more "reliable and drivable" nature. In other words, they knew people didn't like the idea of having to drive stick, so they gave them a watered down automatic.

Now, to the second part. The reason some people with just an SS badge (as oppose to and SS supercharged badge) have a supercharger is because they simply acquired parts from the 2.0l version and put them on their 2.4l N/A engine. It's a very common and simple process. Do a search and you'll find hundreds of threads on this subject.

2.4 ss usually have around 150-155 to the wheels stock, where as the ss/sc has anywhere from 205-215hp stock, some even more.
