Well ****..Been starting the car everyday and engine has a nice idle, quick rev and supercharger building pressure. Finally got around to installing the axles and bleeding the master cylinder and once I started the car and put it into 1st gear the ******* tranny exploded and dropped the axle gear thru the bottom of the case.

Depressed as all hell and have no idea what went wrong. Done plenty of engine builds and clutch jobs and this is a 1st. Engine and tranny mounted together fine and I used the ZZP custom flywheel for mounting the 2.4L to LSJ 5 speed.

Any ideas?

sad to hear. Hope you can fix it all. Perhaps the folks at ZZP can guide you, they have a lot of experience in this sort of conversion. I have none.

sounds like the trans mission might have been between gears

How hard is it to remove the tranny from the bottom? Really don't want to go through all the trouble of pulling the motor again and already have the car jacked up. Has anyone pulled from the bottom or a DIY?

drop the subframe out and it is very easy, actually the preferred way to pull a trans than from the top. I have a how-to for the F35 in PDF form, if you wanna pm me your email I'll send it to you

Yes please send PDF, I have PM"d you . My email is my Member name @yahoo.com

I have also confirmed the tranny was between gear. The passenger side axle was in and the gear skipped below and had nowhere to go other than the bottom of the case. I got pictures and will send later.

Thanks for the PDF, very useful and only took me less than 4hr to drop the tranny. Could have done it in 3hr if it were not for the 18mm bolt near the starter, it was a ****..

Below are some pictures, you can see where the passenger side axial was inserted but the gear had slipped below.

Trying to split the tranny case now and possibly thinking that I might be able to have the section that was blown out TIG welded. It blew out in 3 pieces and I know a good welder that once did a similar repair on a CBR929 that i wrecked and cracked the aluminum case so anything possible and does not need to look pretty.

We'll I finally got around to opening the tranny and was actually surprised to see the gears, synchro' and shafts are all in good shape (guessing previous owner replaced or rebuilt) as far as the differential it's toast and obvious that the drive gear slipped under axle when I installed.

Been looking for a replacement F35 tranny but damn these are hard to find without dropping big money. 2.2 and 2.4 trans are everywhere and cheap

Any chance the case from other Cobalts are the same and swappable to the LSJ?

none easily interchangeable. The star drive gears in an open diff cant drop unless the gears or the cage is broken. So you didnt do anything wrong , assembling the axles, the diff failed. Sucks. Open diffs will fail if you spin the wheels a lot. When you get power hop as well , and one wheel spin, its all brutal on an open diff.

When it punched out the bottom the section came out in 2 pieces so I am thinking having a buddy TIG weld it and dropping in an LSD. At this point there appears to be no cheap options and I need to get this car on the road.

the issue is what happened inside. The cases are not easy to weld, if the welder doesnt get enough heat, if the case is not preheated, then the welds may not even penetrate, no matter how nice they look.

but inside is another matter. You can buy junkyard transmissions for between 300 and 900 dollars. best bet. standard auto wreckers are nationwide and guarantee that the parts work okay.

cast aluminum welds are generally 50-65% of original strength, that is if the weld is perfect...
