Supercharger Maintenance

I know some of these topics have been discussed individually before, and not in too great a detail, so I am making a post here so that the answers to these questions regarding any maintenance that may be done to the S/c can be consolidated into one location.

1. Do we need to change the oil in our blowers? If so, how often?

2. The coupler in the supercharger, how hard is it to change? Is there a how to?

3. Removing the supercharger, how hard is it, is there a how to? is there a gasket or anything like that that needs to be replaced once it is removed?

4. I have seen mention to different bearings inside the supercharger, i.e. rotor bearings and needle bearings, whats the difference is any, what lube is used for which?

5. I also saw mention to the rotor bearings needing to be repacked with grease, how often? Or is this only in an instance of bearing failure.

6. For the guys running smaller pulleys, other than swap the pulley, have you changed the oil in the s/c at all, or changed the coupler, how prone is the coupler to wear.

As stated, some of this exists on the .net already in bits and pieces and I just wanted to make this post so that the people with the answers can post them here in an efort to consolidate this information.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The s/c is a sealed unit and is designed to maintenence-free for 100k miles. Aside from that, I'm only sure of how to pull it off and swap pullies. But I have a lot of time to learn the rest.

hell yea man, good questions, i would like to know if I needed to re lube my sc now or whenever. im sure it wouldnt hurt to lube it up every 20-30k but i just need to know which lube to use...... the sc is really easy to get off. ANd there is a gasket there but you dont have to replace it even though most would recomend this. there is 4 bolts in the sc and u just remove a few connections, and ur drivebelt and there u go its off.

Depends on who you go with. GM states it is maintenance free and should not need maintenance for 100,000 miles. Eaton says the oil should be changed every 30,000 miles. Since Eaton *MAKES* the SC I would tend to believe them.

I don't believe it is too difficult, however I haven't taken it apart so I don't know for sure. I don't know if there is a how to on this or not.


3. Removing the supercharger, how hard is it, is there a how to? is there a gasket or anything like that that needs to be replaced once it is removed?

Removing the SC is pretty simple. Remove belt, remove intake and TB, unbolt and it comes off. I have never taken just the SC off, but you may need to pull the injectors and fuel rail to get the SC off as well. If so, pulling the injectors is very simple as well. There is a gasket but as long as you don't damage it you shouldn't need to replace it.


4. I have seen mention to different bearings inside the supercharger, i.e. rotor bearings and needle bearings, whats the difference is any, what lube is used for which?

This one I don't know - someone else will have to chime in.


5. I also saw mention to the rotor bearings needing to be repacked with grease, how often? Or is this only in an instance of bearing failure.

This I don't know for sure either. I would imagine anytime you open the SC (for i.e. to change the coupler) you should repack the bearings.

I have not changed my SC oil yet, however when I hit 30,000 miles I plan on doing it. There are some guys on here that have changed the SC oil. The coupler is very prone to wearing because of what it does. The rattling that you hear at idle becomes more and more pronounced as the coupler wears. I am not sure if there is a suggested coupler replacement schedule, perhaps 100,000 miles?

1. There is not scheduled oil change for you blower however i would change it every 10,000 miles maybe, i dont know what bad oil in a supercharger looks like but i have 18,500 and i just changed my oil in the supercharger.

2. Its not hard at all, its basically pressed onto 3 **** that still out of the supercharger gears, pop the old one off and press the new one on. simple as pie, however you must drain the oil out of the supercharger when you open it up to change the coupler so doing both at the same time kills 2 birds with 1 stone.

3. Pretty much already explained in previous posts.

4. The snout bearings are located in the front of the supercharger where the snout is located when you seperate the snout from the housing the bearings are located in the snout. the needle bearings or rotor bearings are located in the back of the superchager housing where the fins are mounts.

5. There is really no need to repack the snout bearings however the needle bearing are quite easy, just grease the bearings til they are coated and full of grease then put the fins back inside the bearings.

6. Obviously by now you probly figured that i have changed them all. I thought my bearings were f'd up so i regreased them, changed the oil and changed the supercharger coupler. To no avail i still heard the same sound as before. I just heard my buddies SS/SC yesterday, his SC has the stock pulley and everything and his makes the same noise as mine so i must have been paranoid.

i never thought to take picks but im actually reaplacing my bearing in a couple weeks when i get them, just to make sure, they are only $20 for OEM bearings and i figure what the hell might as well, changed everything else why not the bearings to.

Hope this has helped, next time i have the SC apart ill take pics for everyone.

You can get the supercharger oil and grease from intense-racing.com. I changed the oil on my supercharger after 12k miles and it looked like hell. I also re greased the needle bearings in the back of the housing and it made it sound alot better!

what kind of grease did you use? also how do you change the s/c oil, is there like a fill/drain plug?

Eaton seals the supercharger for life (~100k miles)

Dont believe anyone who says otherwise.

If you want to change it.. be VERY certian the correct amount of oil is replaces as it makes a BIG difference and is VERY bad if you overfill.

there is a little drain bolt on the snout..... I used the grease from intense-racing.

Where does Eaton say that at? I spoke with an Eaton S/C engineer and he said that the M62 gen 5 blowers do not require the oil to be changed.

I thought I had read it on their website to change the oil every 30,000. Maybe that was on the gen 4 SCs. Either way, I don't know if I would really trust the oil to last *forever* - seems like an awfully long time....

100ml should be used in the snout. If you overfill it, it will blow the snouts gasket and you will have the oil everywhere. I changed the oil in mine at 12k miles and it was dirty as hell!

You Dont Have To Change The Supercharger Oil!!!

untill at least 100k..

I say there is more potential for harm by changing it than by leaving it sealed..
