That was going to be my question too. Does it not meet expectations?

You aren't going to notice anything by switching brands, and neither is your car.

last week i was talking to my old boss who is now working for petro-canada in the oil sales division. i asked him about different synthetics. basicly what he told me is mobil 1 is a marketing hype, being the first readily avalible synthetic in the north american market, and that it isnt a bad oil, but all the other synthetics have caught up and even surpassed then as far as quality goes, and you pay for the name. he also said that most of the "value brands" (quaker state, penzoil, castrol, ect) are very close in quality and there is no reason not to use them over mobil or other so called "premium" synthetics (amsoil, redline, royal purple). another thing he mentioned is that the dye that give royal purple the color breaks down rather fast and because the additives in it are so high, it does tend to leave sludge.

another interesting fact i learned from him is that petro-canada supplies all the bulk oil to dealerships in canada. when you get synthetic oil put in at the dealer, its petro canada synthetic, not mobil 1.

oh and just so everyone know, he wasnt telling me all this bs to sell me petro-canada oil, the smallest quantity i can buy from him is 55 gallons.

and to that though, i must say, i have used royal purple for almost the life of my engine and when i had it torn apart for replacing vavles i saw NO sludge at all...although i did find that the inside of the head where the cams are is a lil diff color

which fully synthetic oil is cheapest? I've just made the switch at 70K and the price of Mobil 1 is outrageous. especially if I'm going to be expected to change it every 3K.

No, because synthetic oil retains the properties needed to make it work well longer than conventional oil.

Any oil works great as long as you change it when you should, if you aren't trying to squeeze 10,000 miles out of your oil, a heavy additive package isn't needed. Use whatever you like, use a quality filter (no store brand crap ones, at least a Delco), and change it every 3000-5000 miles. You won't have a problem.

sharkey fyi petro canada does not supply exclusivly all bulk oil to dealerships in canada...based on internet info freely available....there are 3 million suppliers world wide, exxon mobil (esso in canada) are big players.

Mobil lead the world in synthetics, no doubt many other compnaies have "caught up" but many manufacturers specify mobil, like Toyota, who sell it in their own can, GM and others. MB and BMW has issues with mobil1 many years ago way back when but AMG specified only mobil at the same time so go figure. I had to bring Mobil 1 to the MB dealer in 1999 to get the oil changed in my AMG. My redline uses Mobil i am happy with it, lots of zdp and i dont worry about it. Wallymart sell it cheap. I also watch for sales...its ez. Good advice from Italian Joe use good oil filters AC Delco is my choice...oh and I change my oil on the instruction from the on board ecu prompt; thats a very good program. 44k miles on my car in 3 seasons of hard running....with meth...lol
