The true potential of an SS?
The true potential of an SS?
After being on here for a while, and seeing peoples progress , i definately see potential in our cars. My question is how much potential is there to be gained? As far as i know no cobalts on here have dyno 300 + hp yet, or hit below 12.8 (fast06ss). I definately have seen the great gains from our stage kits but does it kind of stop there after that as far as the supercharger go? Anything smaller 2.5" is not worth it right because your out of the rpm efficiency range right? I know you can make any car fast but realistically whats the soft cap for this car before it starts taking massive amount of money to break the hp/tq barriers? From what it seems, it looks around 265 hp is what alot of people get up to through mods and upgrades before they have to start doing serious mods.
O and im at work no curse words please

It was twincharged BTW. the only thing changed was the head gasket.
He had A LOT more potential on that car (I think he was only running around 24psi) be he was forced to sell it, and it was sitting on a lot for a while. It has been purchased within the last week, so maybe this pheonix can take life once again!
well not many people have tired a bigger supercharger. and not many have gone complete turbo since its a new car no one wants to break there warranty. the ecotec's are known to have great power potential tho.
http://www.gm.com/company/gmtunersou.../race_shop.htm the build book shows how to make this power well kinda it shows some parts that will be need and then parts that can help to make big power it doesnt really say exactly how to build it up. we still need people that either have money/ or are sponsered to try new stuff in their car.

TC has a lot of potnetial. because you can use a relitivly latge turbo, and not owrry about lag as the SC will provide low end power and exhust gas to spool it.

The m62 is a small blower, and I think 300whp is the tops you are going to get with it alone, with out spray. It just is too small to push much more air than that on it's own before it is horribly inefficient.
People have done the 2.5", 60# and meth inj. and got 295whp, don't plan on too much more than that unelss you want to:
A) Swap for a larger SC (m90, twinscrew) but this seems a little price for the gains
B) Turbo only. Get big gains, with a little lag
C) Twin charge and get the best of both worlds, for not that much of a cost if you do some work yourself.
It is also possible to hit 300hp from our blower and not going twin charged. Im aiming for 300 hp as my final goal. Then working on visual work. My final additions to the enging will be my 2.6 zzp pulley (just delivered) 60# injectors (on order), 3 in catless down pipe, and the hahn header. If i wanted to go turbo, i would have bought a neon, or a DSM.
my personal goal for my car is like around 300hp. i think that would eb soo sweet. I know with intense stage 5 i can get kinda close to that with a intake and exhaust if tuned properly.
Keep in mind this car is just starting it's third model year which means it's young. Cars won't hit their stride in the tuning market until sufficient time for R and D has passed. 300hp seems to be the limit of the stock SC, but the engine can take more. So the aftermarket needs time to get power adders to work right on this car. DSMs didn't get a huge aftermarket over night and neither did the civic. It takes time to develope these things. They are coming, so don't worry. My prediction is that with in a year or two tops we will see the 300hp barrier shattered.
As mentioned twin charging is coming soon, and bigger blowers are in the works too. This car already has a big aftermarket considering it's young.

Just a personal thing, but I do everything on my own. I don't do 'stages' or 'kit's. You can be MUCH better off doing it yourself (allowing that your not an idiot when it comes to cars) because you know EXACTLY what is going on.
The only way you will be able to get lots of power out of the 2.0 is by turbocharging it, whether it's twincharged or a turbo swap. I have a hold on buying new mods to see what those turbo swaps from hahn racecraft can do.
yes, i think the future of the cobalt relies on a turbo of some sort. but i am amazed at the parts avaible for our cars so soon. look at the redline and the time it was out befor some we came. amazing. but i want to give it time and place parts on that will hopefully comply with a turbo system. who knows what will happen

I mean that TC is coming to the masses soon. I would be willing to say the majority of the people here couldn't install stage 2 themselves let alone a Turbocharger. Especially if they started from scratch. I'm not sure I can do that even and I am confident in my mechanical and engineering skills. Not everyone is mechanically inclined though. I myself like doing my own work also, but that doens't mean I won't take advantage of a kit. It means the R and D have been done for you and you are going to have less of a headache. It's not a bad thing.
You are going to know exactly what's going on with your car even if you use kits. As long as you are installing the stuff yourself you know whats going on. Some people don't have the know how, or facilities to do a major upgrade to their car. So these people rely on someone else and they may not know what's going on with their car as well as we shade tree mechanics do. That's ok too. It doesn't make them less of a person.
there have been a number of cars that have beaten 12.8 in the 1/4
as for breaking 300 hp, no one has quite done it yet (there have been some REALLY REALLY close ones), but no one feels like replacing internal parts of the engine
**actually, i take that back, there is someone who has hit 550 hp by using a Kenne Bell SC (if i am correct) - it cost him a lot of money, but it was cheaper then buying a vette

around 300 i would be satisfied, it just seems Turbos are much easier to upgrade then Superchargers.

And it is also true that the balt is new, it's not gonna se a lot of aftermarket support. People are still on warrenties and most haven't touched the internals. There's a lot of power trapped in there by swapping cams and pistons. If I read right someone aroudn here is installing 10:1 compression pistons into their SC? It's a bit much for street driving but if anyone can break 300ph it'll be that guy.

Here is the TC (before a lot of tuning) vs a stock. Enjoy:
so the bottom line is:
yes you can hit 300 (and quite a few are very close)
yes you can go BEYOND 300 hp but you need to get forged internals
yes you can hit 550 hp but you REALLY need to go indepth with a new blower and everything
yes, this car is relatively new. Once warranties are up, the modding community will soar and many companies will jump on the bandwagon for moidding the cobalt

Give me another 5-6 weeks and my engine will be done and tuned. I have done everything you guys are talking about. The cams from JBP alone are expected to net 26hp and the head will be as free flowing as you can get. I know everyone is not into spending what I have, but we will see how far this Supercharger can be pushed with an added turbo. We will also learn how reliable this is for daily driving. Other than going to work (I work way too far away) I will drive this car everywhere. We will get initial dyno's when we are tuning but I will not be turning up to full boost until 3,000 miles. However I plan on putting those first 3,000 on quickly.
