Turbo from exhaust

Have any of you seen the show "Rides" on the discovery channel? Well last night four teams were modifying a new chevy HHR (horrible choice, why this car, I do not know). Anyway, the dudes working on it explained that a turbo wouldn't fit it the small engine compartment (which holds a 4 cylinder) so they hooked up a turbo to the exhaust underneath the car, tubing the air back to the engine. The dude said this results in a 150 hp gain! This definitely caught my attention. Are those kind of gains possible on our car? Can anyone explain to me what's going on there? That is crazy!!!

sure its possible. Not sure if that is the case for this certain instance like said, but it is possible. Also I just lifted the hood on the HHR in the showroom and it is kinda tight in there.

There is a thread on these already. We came to the conclusion that they were too expensive. The turbo needs a housing and without everyday care it would become unreliable. I Still like the concept.

Yep, I saw a cobalt ls at the GMSCB last summer with an STS system and they said they were about 200 WHP. They were still working out the tuning issues so I am sure it's improved at this point.

I thought turbo lag was assocaited with the time it takes the impeller/turbine to overcome inertia and spin up and not about the length of pipes in the system....

actually Sport Compact Car tested a few cars set up with the remote mount turbos like that and they said there was little to no turbo lag to their surprise.

the only problem is that the turbo and oil line that goes to it are not protected from any damage if the car is bottomed out.

depends on turbo size, think of the exhaust comming out of the manifold (travel distance) compared to at the end of the exhuast...yea and a dangerous setup for like u said saftey of lines and turbo

We discussed it at great length. Bottom line. It's a really shitty way to integrate FI to your car.

There has to be some thought in installing a turbo to a car and that shows disregard to all design logic that we have learned over the years...

you'll get the lag from the size of turbo, diameter of piping, length of piping and size of IC core. The more air the turbo has to fill up the more lag is gona be associated with it. I duno bought 150hp gain...is that at the wheels too? I call BS and a sack of BS. but its possible to do it but u won't see 150hp gains unless u have it on a V8. On a 4 banger you're gona have to run the smallest turbo u can find and smallest diameter piping and the IC the size of a shoebox haha jk but small...but definitely gona have to keep the S/C to help rid of the lag.

here we go on the nitrous discussion again, nitrous is safe, has been used for more than 50 years, and is cheap...BUT, you must know what your doing, and yes a 150 shot is WAY to much, I run a 75 wet, MAX...
