twincharge question

so the other nite a buddy of mine and i were working on the car and we got to talking about twincharging the balt. now i know there are a lot of little things such as oil lines, oil pan etc... but in theory could this work....get a turbo exhaust manifold with turbo and downpipe from zzp. then we were talking about doing some custom bent piping. could this work? and also would it be possible to run without an intercooler as i am currently running most cooling mods with the exception of meth, but that is being added very soon. this is a build that is a far way out but we were discussing and trying to see how much would go into it. any insight and opinions r greatly welcome. thanks in advance everyone!

Old news zzp made a kit. They don't make it anymore for a reason. Tuning nightmare and to expensive. Either go full Turbo or just stay supercharged

Melon 04-23-2012 07:40 PM

i know they made a kit and discontinued. i am just trying to do something a lil different rather than just stay 1 or swap to the other. im sure tuning isn't the easiest but thats not so much the part i'm focusing on right meow

DSmastery 04-23-2012 07:47 PM

a guy, Chris in Lancaster twin charged his cobalt back in 09. no traction haha

Melon 04-23-2012 07:51 PM

did he buy a kit or fab up his own? wut was he running boose wise?

i dont remember any of the specs, there may be a thread floating around. ill check

there's even i guy who had a remote mount or that rear mounted turbo on the exhaust

Melon 04-23-2012 07:59 PM

yea i'm familiar with that setup. not the way i wanna run it if i decide to go forth with project. wanna run it all up front

DSmastery 04-23-2012 08:04 PM

i could be wrong about the guy chris twin charging but here is his screen name

hungryhip-ccp

idk how offen he logs on tho

he did do a full turbo swap and motor build, alot of threads started by him too

Melon 04-23-2012 08:09 PM

alright cool thanx. any other inputs/thoughts....

Would be sweet just to show off that you built something like that but not really worth it. The whole point of the kit is so you never have lag and have the best of both worlds. However, you can get a turbo for these cars small enough to have very little lag but also be capable of making good power so it's just easier to do a turbo build.

Melon 04-23-2012 11:01 PM

i know that. but i'm hoping in the future to put down some serious numbers with 0 lag so was gonna do a bigger size turbo

that is a sick setup and wish it was stil being made. but since its not i was pondering if its possible to run a setup like that minus the intercooler. i know the bigger turbos push so much air so fast that it can actually run cooler air. just use meth into the sc to cool the air. is this possible or is it just the stuff pipe dreams r made of? lol

Ive been toying with this idea myself.

eholmes1212 04-24-2012 07:35 AM

Agreed, same idea on this end. Although I really do not want a blown motor.. as far as tuning goes, Vince has been god to me so far and i am confident he could pull through.

As far as if we were to run the intercooler How/Where.

I have also been told that the better exhaust mani for are cars are the SAAB 9-3 04+ is this correct?

I also consider at times getting an "ebay" setup for the setup and upgrading the Turbo. Opnions????

SCcobaltSS 04-24-2012 12:29 PM

I twincharged my car a while ago and am now straight turbo. Tuning was a little difficult but just being straight turbo is way easier in every aspect.

IATs were high, even though I had the stock pulley, or it might have been larger, on the SC. Not sure why since I had dual pass and an flow through tank. I needed a larger wastegate (I had a 38mm) for a little better control of the boost creep. I should have gone with a larger frame turbo like a 35R and a .82 a/r to slow the turbo from spooling so fast.

I did reach 20 psi at about 2k rpm which was cool. Problem with the tune is it is difficult to bypass the blower before 4k rpm since the computer cant control before that easily. I think I did find out how to do it though.

You will need an air-air. I dont think the stock system and water meth will do.

Bottom line there have been many that SAY they are going to do it and few that actually do. If you do the kit correctly and stick with it you should like it but dont just throw the kit on and expect a magic. You will need a built motor or your just asking for trouble.

Go to the Official Turbo thread to talk about straight turbo cars. You'll get answers there.

this much i am aware of. i am currently collecting parts to do anengine build. i've already got cams, valve springs and retainers. working on pistons, rods, valves. also already found a shop that will assemble for me and they have a flow bench to port the head as well. the twincharge would be after all this. regarding the air to air i am currently running the zzp stage 3 so i have the s3 heat exchanger. i also upgraded to dual pass with option b. think an air to air is stil neccessary?

Melon 04-24-2012 01:59 PM

also i am not expecting it to be plug and play. i know its gonna take time and patience. and a lot of tuning

SCcobaltSS 04-24-2012 02:13 PM

You will probably want to do something about the stock sleeves while your in there.

I still think a air->air is needed. The stock laminova system will still probably be inefficient.

Melon 04-24-2012 02:16 PM

yea i was debating on sleeving the block with darton sleeves

SCcobaltSS 04-24-2012 02:33 PM

Just get the ZZP girdle, its cheaper.

user 72239 04-24-2012 02:38 PM

a guy here in my club twincharged his 06, he custom built his charge piping and intercooler and everything. He cut away his bumper to fit that massive intercooler. he bought an ebay turbo kit for like 500 bucks and threw it on there with a canned ZZP Tune. it made 310 hp 300 tq lol.

Melon 04-24-2012 02:42 PM

great idea with the girdle block. that completely slipped my mind.
