Vortex generator

Anyone know anything about "vortex generators" that supposedly increase horsepower and mpg by 20% or more by creating a vortex in the combustion chamber? I'll put the link down so ya'll can see it too. I'm curious about the claims it makes...it's real cheap so I might just buy it to see what it can actually do.

I tried this. And i thought i had bent it to the proper circumferance for my cai, guess not, guess it kept getting stuck (not turning), so i was losing power (not enough air getting through now, since it blocks some of the cai tube.

this is the only one I know of where corvette owners have gone and said there was an increase in response and fuel economy : edit : notice how it looks A LOT like the fujita intake ... this came out almost 5 years ago

Those things are a rip off. Lets take a look at the add piece by piece:

"Better Gas Mileage: The Power Maxx allows your engine to burn fuel more efficiently, resulting in mileage gains as high as 31%. With gas prices constantly on the rise, it will pay for itself in no time."

How do either these things make your gas mileage increase by 31%? Fuel "ionization" means nothing. Whether the fuel has a postive, negative or neutral charge it is going to burn the same, not to mention it would take quite a bit of energy (more then a small magnet can produce) to remove an elelctron from the gas molecule. Moving air through an obstruction is going to make the car work harder to get the air not easier. Making the air move in a "circular" motion will also not increase gas mileage. You are still getting the same amount of air into the motor. This thing is not going to force more air into the combustion chamber like a supercharger. This also brings us to point 2:

"More Power: Whether you have a stock or aftermarket air intake system, you will see a power increase of up to 35 horsepower."

Running a completely open intake (no filter or other obstructions) will not even gain you 35 HP, maybe 10-15 HP TOPS, and you would probably do nasty damage to the motor by sucking in all those large particles. The only way to get that much of a power increase is to add a S/C or turbo.

"Smoother Shifting: Vehicles with an Automatic Transmission will shift smoother than before"

So how does adding a "fuel ionizer" to the fuel line, or a "vortex generator" to the intake make the transmission shift smoother? The transmission has NOTHING to do with either of these components so they could not possibly have any effect.

"Superior Quality: The Power Maxx is made of precision CNC machined AIRCRAFT GRADE ALUMINIUM - NOT HAND MADE like others on Ebay, and is backed by a lifetime warranty. This is the highest quality vortex generator available on Ebay!! It is guaranteed to outlast your car. The Power Maxx's fins are engineered to improve engine combustion without restricting the airflow. Because the fins do not obstruct the middle of the intake pipe, air is allowed to flow freely into the engine. This results in improved performance and takes away any stress on the fins themselves."

This is just BS as I've already stated above. And of course they will outlast the car, they do nothing and there is nothing to go bad.

"30-Day Money Back Guarantee: The number of satisfied customers using our product is growing day by day! Try it for 30 days, and if you are not 100% satisfied, you can return it with no questions asked. Get more horsepower and better fuel economy or your money back."

Wow. That is all I can say about this. All the scams offer you a 30 day guarantee, it makes you feel better about buying the product. Now where you can actually get your money back or not is a whole different story....

Myth Busters did a show on those products. They did absolutely nothing for gas mileage or power.

well that totally answers the question for me. I love mythbusters. they also did that MPG test with the a/c. turns out using the a/c and having your windows down decreases your mpg by the same amount. good stuff. Thanks

These are the only vortex generators worth a damn - and they definitely don't help your fuel economy.

go ahead and buy it theyre great.

theres one born every minute. you guys shouldnt help people like this. he should realize that if it was this easy to get better gas mileage the automakers would have been all over it long ago.

People who have no general understanding of mechanics should not be aloud under the hood. Which is why warranties get voided.

And I agree people who buy this should get kicked in the nuts........Very hard

as has been said above... these things are total and complete bullshit... several well known companies have tested them (Popular Mechanics being one) and have gotten results ranging from "nothing" to "5hp loss."

Try it for yourself and see if you must, then toss the thing back on e-bay for some other poor sap to buy so you can get your money back.
