A wise man once said... if you are going to put all the money in the car to go fast, might as well save some to make sure you can stop... aka... buy some brakes and suspension.

if its gonna take you 10 months to save $3500 then this project isnt for you. Even if you put the kit together and did all the work yourself, you would still be WAY over budget. Nobody here has even hit 450whp yet so it almost a guarentee that there would be alot of trial and error involved, not to mention going full standalone, which hasnt been done either....

They have articles for a 300+ hp build, and with a lot of other things 500hp may be achievable but not practical.

It is a bit much, especially if you expect the car to last a while.

as it has been stated there are some smart post here alot of dumb ones too.

they key to 500 WHP is not the motor as the motor it self can be built to handle 500 WHP all day long with off the shelf parts. If off the shelf parts cant be found (which I know they can now days) Then you can have custom parts made but it's going to be even more costly.

There are 3 basic keys to achieving 500 WHP.

(1) selection of the right turbo charger and components: for a drop in kit that will need little to no fabrication I suggest you get in contact with bill hahan Jr. aka EcoBoost they have developed a full on turbo kit for the SS S/C and Ion REDLINE.

(2) The funding: plan on spending at least 10K if you want to do the building of the motor and the installation of the turbo kit your self.

(3) Tuning: add some more money if your going to have a professional tuner tune your car.

www.gmtunersource.com is a very good source for information on big ecotec POWER.

Hahn's new turbo kit will make 500hp a reality for these cars.

you could build the engine to withstand the 500hp, follow the GM buildbook and do some head work and try to make like 300 - 350, (using the M62) and then spray her down with a 150hp shot of nitrous!!

and Im serious, that would work.......I think

I think considering the displacement of the LSJ head work and cams are in order. I think you would need to spin it upto 8K and have some VERY agressive cams to make it to the 350 WHP range on the stock M62. By then the tiny M62 would be screaming uncle. not to mention you gotta get rid of the K/R. The nitrous will help but at the same time its increasing cylinder pressure which creates heat.

Why not Turbo charge and create a balance between static compression ratio, boost and timing along with opening up the head and adding cams?

500hp??? Not exactly sure, but if you want to still use a supercharger I would look into the Harrop TVS 1320, then go twin-charged with properly sized turbos. Not to mention all the supporting mods needed to hold the power. Don't ask me for details. I'm still learning.

Just get a **** ton of cash saved up (and I mean a SHIIIITTT TOOOONNNN, lol) and then take your car to Jason Whitfield at Rage Performance/Whitfield Racing out in CA. He built a 950whp streetable 2.2........so yes, big #'s are possible in a Cobalt..........you just gotta be ready to cough up some serious cash.

Biggest #'s i've seen thusfar on the forum is 06blackG85ss.........411whp from his turbo swapped build.

It's actually a destroked 2.2 engine if i recall correctly. It's a 1.9L or something like that. I've seen the car more then once. Its got a huge Turbo and a HUGE FMIC and the ability to rebv very high. Also, not to knock Jason whitfield because he is awesome but his crew isnt very bright. When I was having issues with clutch masters clutches. They didnt want to give me my money back they insisted that it was my fault that the clutches were going and then they insisted that it was the Saturn Techs fault. So I let them pick the shop for the install and they choose Whitfield Racing. A.K.A. Rage Performance. So I took my car to them and to make a long story short they put Green antifreese in my car not Dex cool like what should've been and there were alot of missing bolts and screws ect after they got done. My car was put together half ass not the mark of a professional. Again I'm not knocking Jason because he was really cool but his crew sucks. I Just went about my buisness and taht when I took the Clutch master's clutch back out and went with the exedy and a whole different motor for that matter. LOL.

Nonetheless, to the Person who started this thread It seems that your best bet to make 500 WHP witll be to eliminate the supercharger and go with a turbo and the right tuning and components.

build motor-hahn turbo kit-tune
Or my personal favorite stock port and polish supercharger-2.7 pulley-60lbinjectors-fullybuilt motor-CNC ported head-stage cams of some sort and that should be close if not then nitrous will make up the little bit lol

Diamond 10:1 pistons
Rods
Rings
Ported and Polished Head
Valves
Valve springs
guides
Cams (272's if you go turbo)
Sleeve for the block
A decent 60 trim turbo (larger A/R)
all piping
79# injectors

and a whole lotta' time, and tuning to get it where you want it that should give you a good starting point!
