Weird grinding coming from engine

Went to start my car today and it was making this weird grinding? Took it to get it looked at and they think its coming from the back of the engine. They didn't think it was the timing chain. Any ideas on what it could be? The car only has 35,000 miles on it so I'm not sure if there are problems that occur around that mileage.?

Car still runs and boosts just fine. Just don't want to drive it until I know exactly what's wrong.

Any ideas or input would be appreciated

Honestly from the description, it sounds like the tensioner but without a video its impossible to give you a true answer

Video.
But it's either timing chain tensioner OR rattling heat shield, depending on how bad your rattle is.

Where is Norway, MI?

If it was a heat shield that's easy to find and I think the shop would have found it. The tensioner is a likely culprit

does it go away when warmed up? because if it doesn't, it sounds exactly like what happened to mine... you may have just spun a couple bearings...

No it doesn't go away when warmed up.. It continues to make the noise. I've let it warm up but I don't want to push it anymore than it has been..

well when i spun my bearings, i also cracked my crank and screwed my rods up... so you may be looking at a somewhat costly rebuild...

So you're think the timing chain tensioner is probably not it? How much was the repair if you don't mind me asking?

i completely built/rebuilt my engine. new crank and bearings will cost you roughly 250-300. but you have to completely take off the bottom end of the engine. easiest if you take the engine out but possible to do in car

Sounds like you spun a bearing. That's very very rare if so. Have any mods? Do you change the oil and let the car warm up before you drive?

The cars engine is completely stock. And the oil is changed every 5000 miles using synthetic Mobil one. And I don't always let the car warm up completely.

After watching the video, I can almost guarantee you, that is the Timing Chain tensioner. Mine sounded just like that when my timing chain tensioner went bad on my LSJ

Yeah I'm really hoping that the timing chain tensioner is the problem I'm not excited about a costly repair so would it be smarter to try and replace the tensioner and see if that fixes the problem before bringing it somewhere to be ripped apart?

You can do it yourself also. There is a how-to I believe. That should save you a few bucks. Also buy your new part from RockAuto.com because you can get factory parts at shop prices aka cheap.

Timing chain tensioner is cheap. It's a 20-30 dollar part and just unbolt and bolt back in. If that doesn't fix it, then you probably spun a bearing. When mine spun, it sounded like it was on the top but tensioner was fine.

It probably wasn't broken then.
Most people have their broken tensioner "explode" when taking it out.

Where did you get new tensioner?
