What happened?

So I was racing this P.O.S Tercel the other day cuz the guy driving was a dumb ass. But what I did made me feel stupider. I was in first gear and i floored it, i heard the rpm's soar to the redline then all of a sudden, my car slowed down really fast and there was no more acceleration until I shifted into second. The whole slow down process lasted about 2 seconds. I just want to know what happened, and if I messed up my car...

Were you low on gas? Did you step on the brake on accident?

That was you hitting the rev limiter in the shortest 1st gear most will ever experience. You'll be fine, just don't do it again, lol. Better learn to adapt, though, and fast. If you ever lose to a Tercel, it's curtains for you, pal!

No I wasn't low on gas, and thanks for the clutch slipping info. But is that common or is that something I should look into getting fixed? Cuz i've raced quite a few other cars since that crap, and it hasn't happened a second time. Could it have been the rev limiter kicking in?

Oh, yea, despite the whole slow down thing, i worked him by at least 4 cars at 85 mph. Either way he had no chance...

If it was the rev limiter you would have known. Your car will start jerking pretty bad!

My last race was a Chevy Camaro V6 1997, and a stock Honda Civic EX. I dusted them both. They were pretty pissed. lmao

Did it slow down real fast when you raced the other guys? Or was it a one time thing?

Get a shift light. they're like $60. After a while you can tell from listening to the engine when to shift, OR watch your RPMs.

Nah, when I raced the other guys it was clean all the way through. However I was paying attention to the RPM's and I shifted right at redline maybe a little before it and the slow down didn't happen.

About the whole listening to the RPM's thing, I'm used to being able to hear the rpms over my stereo because I used to drive an eclipse gs with an AEM intake in it. That car revved REALLY loud so I could tell. The cobalt is much quieter and i'm not used to it yet. been driving it for a week now.

And a little friendly FYI:

Even though the redline on the tach is 6500 RPM, the limiter kicks in at 6250 RPM. Went and checked about a month ago.

Yeah man you need HPTuners!!!! Raise that rev limiter to 7400. When the car hits 7100 it is just hitting the sweet spot!!!

That's weird, I've shift right when I'm at 6500rpm. Sometimes I hit the limiter (1 jolt) then shift, but it usually right at the redline. where did you get the info?
