what K&N has to say about CEL

ok so i called K&N. i find this hilarious. i tell them ya know i have a 2006 cobalt SS. i bought a intake and its coming up with the 171 code (too lean). he asks if i have disconnected the battery for more than a hour. i say Yes. he then says. oh wait!!!! u have a 2006? Yes i reply. he then tells me. K&N does not offer a intake for the 2006 Cobalt SS's. i said uh what? he says i am running a 2005 intake on my 2006 and is not recommended by K&N. i said isnt it allt he same? and he said that from 2005-2006, GM may have done ECU changes to the cars and thats why its pulling a CEL. so thats it. But my question is. How the hell does a metal pipe and a air filter make a difference in the 2 cars? sounds stupid to me. so i guess when someone buys a intake for a 01 civic the need to clarify more than just a 01-03 because THERE MAY BE COMPUTER CHANGES!!!! lol

Then do it see if it changes, if it doesn't then call them back again. Only way your going to get a real answer is if you but the **** out of them.

i ordered it from modern performance and they said that all i have to do is disconnect the battery for a hour and if i send it back then K&N will just send it back to them and then they will send the same one back to me. modern performance said that there cobalt's CEL comes on and off and they just ignore it.

I have a code reader , i was just clearing it my self , untill it got cold it was showing about every 500 miles with the colder weather its getting more frequent ... I do know the engine Rev's quicker with it , and you can hear the SC a mile away .. i think every one should call GM at 1-866-952-4368 and file a complaint to force them into fixing the problem , the stock air box and filter also set the code.

the lean code would be fixed with bigger fuel injectors.

Just install headers/downpipe with no cat, and they you'll throw a O2 code, and the light will be on all the time, and you won't notice the light going on and off from the 0171. And you'll be faster!

I've got the lean code with my KN as well.

I hooked mine up to my scanner and got some real-time A/F readings. Never once did it go lean on me, it's just throwing the lean code because the car's computer is very sensitive to how it get's it's air. It's all in the stock, tight-ass tune. The GM staged upgrades should do away with the codes.

Just leave it on. How much leaner could it possibly make it! I wouldn't personally worry about it. It's definitely not lean enough to blow the motor...

Just install the stock air box , get your upgrades ang change out the intake , no big deal , if you need work no big deal do the same , my dealer said they dont care about the intake , only after marker programs that play with the sensors and pcm .

I ignore the damn CEL now it comes and goes, it does not run differently, so I say forget it until staged upgrade kits are out!!!

I'm glad my Cobalt brothers are having the same issues w/the LSJ that I am/was having. I'd get a CEL on about every other week. Everything from Running too lean to what one tech called, "too much debris on the S/C inlet sensor". Here's the thread, may have some information for my fellow cobalt LSJers http://www.******************/forums/...ine-light.html

So far I've run about a month without the CEL on. Knocking on wood......

I don't know why people are having such issues with this intake. Personally I've only had the CEL come on once for the two months I had the intake before I put into storage. I thought it was a lean code but actually just posted a unknown error light and I cleared it and nothing more of it since.

My dealership doesn't give a **** what I do to the car and they can't wait for me to order my stage 2 kit from them and have it be installed. They said they are getting the first stage 2 kit in FEB 06 to learn how to install and configure it on an SS, I told them they can do mine first .
