if you hold on to the flywheel really tight and jump off a building at just the right time it will take you whereever you want.... it is similar to a helicoptor

Install 4 of them on your car and then youll really fly!

Its a weight that spins with the motor to smooth out the operation of the motor.

See what you get when you ask a legitimate question. At least one person was helpful.

I know eh? Ppl just wanna find out sometimes, we all had to find out at one point.

The Flywheel is part of the transmission on a Manual ( 5 spd) car.

It spins with the engine. The lighter it is, the quicker the engine will rev.

Thats the jist of it.

To put simply: The flywheel spins with the engine, and mates to the clutch to spin up the trans/drivetrain to the speed of the engine.

A lighter flywheel would let you rev the engine up faster, or drop revs quicker because of less rotational inertia trying to stop you.

It doesn't change your engines overall HP. It just helps get more to the road.

Exactly. If a typical drivetrain loss is about 12%, then the lighter flywheel helps lower that number. It can also make it more difficult to drive in heavy traffic (touchier throttle).

auto tranny's have flywheels as well.....they just look different then the ones you will find in a manual tranny.

In other words, if you jerk on a shift just blame your flywheel .

a flywheel is just a metal disk that bolts to the back of the crankshaft and connects the engine to the tranny. manuals use a clutch to engage the tranny to the flywheel, autos have the torque converter bolted directly to the flywheel. it also has gear teeth on its edge that mesh with the gear drive on the starter to spin the engine while cranking. hope that helps

I believe the flywheel in the SC/SS is already a reasonably light flywheel...

you don't want to go with a flywheel that is too light, as you may experience issues with performance on inclines (hills) due to having less mass to keep you going, along with making your car very touchy to drive. Lightened flywheels are usually a mod you do after you're done moding the engine so it's already nice and healthy.
