Why am I getting knocks?
Why am I getting knocks?
I put back my GM Stage 2 kit for the winter but I'm still using the NGK BKR-7E spark plugs. I'm getting knocks, up to 3-4 degrees each time I do a WOT pull in 3rd gear. I'm using 91 octane gaz... despite this is not 93 octane, I still never got that much knock before! I have to say too that our winter is particulary cold here, around 10F during the evening when I did my WOT pulls.
I have to add too that no, I don't do those pulls often and during a long time, pretty dangerous but each time I stomp the gaz in third gear, I'm seeing continuous knocks, like I said around 3 to 4 degrees, this is quite a lot and I'm wondering why.

well the problem is not the 91 octane gaz, it's that you are using 91 octane gaz without naaaaawwwwsssss!
Nop, all the setup you see in my signature is my SUMMER setup... my winter setup is the same, except that I put back the GM Stage 2 PCM, 42 lbs injectors and the GM Stage 2 pulley. I keep also the same spark plugs, the NGK BKR-7E, one step colder.
Damn I have the same problem! Crazy knock at the top of 3rd.. My car doesn't move at all either...
And I have changed my plugs to BKR7Es as well.. and the Autolite equivalents too.. (1 step colder)
Think it could be the plugs?
I'm on stage 2 with a 2.9.... Hmmmmm...

First of all why the hell are you beating on your cars that hard in the winter at these cold temps? Your asking for trouble. These cars knock. I have seen people knock stock, stage two, fully built. Not to mention our knock sensors suck and cant distinguish between real engine knock and enviromental knock or gear clash.
Dont beat on it too much in the cold and you should be fine. Before I went E85 I would see a little knock at anything below 40 degrees F outside, on the same sutup I would see none above that temp. I would imagine it to get worse with cold
nope. but maybe theres a reason i'm number 10 on the stock m62 horsepower, number 8 on torque. 60k miles on the stock clutch and it STILL doesn't slip. and STILL pulls 2.0 60' times. cause i don't beat on it and i drive it right. especially during the winter
I'm not beating it that much at all... just when the road is clean, and when I'm passing on that same road which has no car circulating and which is looong and never seems to end. I did those WOT pulls in fact 3 or 4 times, during like 2-3 seconds nothing more and getting back to normal speed but each time I always saw that knock.
And in those 3 or 4 pulls, 2 of time was to be sure that I really could see knock and that I didnt dream. But I can't see if I had any during the winter last year because I didnt have my Interceptor gauge. So... I'm wondering if this is only the cold air or my plugs. Maybe we should put back our stock plugs (not one step colder) during cold time?

You didnt exactly specify, you said you see knock when you "stomp the gas"... are you seeing KR at the top of the gear? Througout the pull? Or just right after you hit the pedal? It is normal to see burst knock when first hitting the gas. Its certainly good to tune it out.. but it is not abnormal to see this. However if you are getting KR through the RPM range or in the high RPMs, I would stop doing WOT pulls until you figure out the cause.
It is also possible that if you are just running the full GM stage 2 tune & parts... that it is off because of the 91 octane. The GM tune is made for the 93 octane which is what is supposed to be ran in the vehicle. Its very possible with the lower octane, the timing is not correct for it, and causing the problems. Unless your tune is specific for 91 octane than I would start putting 93 in there. Not a good Idea to run a lower octane than what is recomended for the vehicle.
