Why aren't the SS' running high 13's 200+ whp stock?

I was just wondering that why aren't the Cobalt SS' running high 13's when some of them are putting down 200-230 whp stock + intake? My GTP with just a smaller pulley (3.4 vs 3.8 stock) short ram intake, reprogrammed pcm, and ubend delete was running high 13's. I never had it dynoed but from other people on the forums I could estimate about 220-230 whp and that was heavier car at 3400+lbs.

If I do a GM Stage 2 + intake on my new cobalt will that possibly get me into the 13's if I can drive it and launch it perfectly??

I would say traction is a big issue. Unless everything is perfect, I spin all the way through 1st, and through some of 2nd. It sucks I have to launch at a ridiculously low RPM. But, there is hope, traction bars, torque dampeners and new mounts get wheel hop and spin way down.

it can be numerous things. gearing, weather, tires, driver, clutch, aerodynamics, etc.

Wheel hop is a major deterent for many to aggressivly launch. That is why our times suck IMO. We have terrible 60' times. Also first gear is practically a granny gear, but second is too tall to start in.

That answer is easy since i own the fastest Impala and Cobalt and the Impala is the same as your GTP,

TORQUE

But i will tell you something, line your car and Cobalt up on a hot day and the Cobalt will take you. Your 13.9 was on a cold day

Ok wise one, i have n't added ANY HP to my car but added almost 40lbft of TQ and i gained 5mph and .6 tenths off in the 1/4 with just TORQUE alone. I could give you many more examples but obviously you don't understand. The honda's have TQ, either when they hit thier 200hp nitrous or at 8500rpm.

Tell that to the S2000 i HALFTRACKED this past tuesday. I think he ran 14.8@92 with MORE HP than me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea, TQ means nothing

Yea Its all traction. I mean I am doing 13.7 w/ a crappy 2.25 60 foot and that was pretty much w/ stage 2 and bolt ons. Also in 90-100 degree heat w/ stock crap tires taht where going balt (I have 13,000 miles on my car now)

If I could get a good launch IM sure I am capable of low 13 second passes. I am waiting for it to cool down and put my P nero's back on and see what I can do. they seemed to be stickier tires even in the cold.

When I had them on I was doing 2.1 60 foots before stage 2 in cold weather, so I am doing 2.3's now with the stock tires and 100 degree heat when they should be warmer and stickier, but they arnt.

Well it really is a combination of everything. Torque is important, but traction seems to be the biggest hurdle to overcome. The traction issue is tough because the car is FWD, plus 1st gear is too short and really helps promote wheels spin.

Drag Radials.

You guys are right about the SS first gear though. I get the same 60' times as a stock SS/SC with my LS Auto Four Door

Many of us, including my self gave up their GTP for a Cobalt SS/SC. The SS is way more fun to drive, and looks like you "think" you're fast, so people want to race to prove you wrong. The GTP was the other way. It had a reputation that made most people not want to race you.

Where did you add the 40ft.lbs??? The horsepower didn't increase in the same area??? Torque is never alone, as horsepower is never alone. But in MOST racing situations (read:not all) horsepower is considered more important.

Didn't you already say this????

https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...2&postcount=15

Stock Buick Roadmasters can pull 2.2 60'. What does it matter that your car with 140 or whatever ft.lbs can pull the same 60' as a car with 190 ft.lbs.????

i would say in stock form its gearing only thing holding a good driver back from a 13 sec slip. Even though i still think even with everything in your favor short of the timming mechine messing up a stock cobalt cant pull a 13 sec pass

You're clearly showing your lack of the ability to do a search. Rob has posted his dyno sheets and gains since day one. Going from a 2.8 to a 2.5" pulley didn't really net him much power, but a bunch of torque. Do a search for Rob's threads and posts and you'll see.

Traction and gearing really hurt this car in the 1/4 mile.

That's for sure. If they would just put a close ratio 6-speed transmission in this car, this car would be considerably faster.

That's all fine and dandy but it isn't correct. You CANNOT add torque without adding horsepower (at the same RPM). It is impossible. His torque was probably added below 5252 RPM so the HP increase wasn't huge but it was there. Add torque above 5252 and see what your HP does.
