Why does it seem like ss/sc are so slow off the line?

Gears are to long.

Civic's have way shorter gearing enabling them to get off the line a tad quicker.

Because everyone thinks the best way to launch is to dump the clutch at 2k.

its not a gearing issue. cobalts have more than enough power to break the tires lose anywhere in 1st gear, so traction is the limiting factor here, not power. And the SI's short gearing is only there to make up for its lack of torque...it (1st gear) about evens out with an ss/sc all said and done

1.) FWD

2.) Gearing designed for a Towing vehicle (look up the F35 specs was built orginally for a towing truck thus why fist gear is ridiculosly short)

3.) Traction

There are a few tricks to getting a FWD car to get out the hole quickly.

1.) Slicks or D/R's.

2.) A wheelie bar. (don't laugh) Was actually done first by a civic racing team. They did the extereme of a wheelie bar. It would put the weight of the back wheels in line so when the car launchs the weight can not transfer to the back tires as the wheelie bar keeps it from transferring weight and squating down on the back as the front rises. This means more tire stays planted to the ground giving a greate increase to traction. Problem is it's not pratical for street racing.

3.) Drag Bags (Essentially the same thing as the wheelie bar but instead keeps the springs in the rear locked from movement to reduce weight transfer and the squatting effect.

4.) Launching technique. If your good with a manual you can overcome the short gearing and use it to your advantage. At the same time knowing where your maximum power without breaking the tires loose is also important aka knowing how much throttle to give it in first.

If I can get the video Werewolf SS actually beat John2k5's Trans Am of the line at Bradenton coming out the hole he cut a 2.08 60 on that. John cut a 1.7.

But thats the 60 foot mark the first 15 feet James had John coming out the hole by a nose. IN A COBALT!

So again it takes time and pratice to get good at it but you can get a cobalt off the line quickly.
