what you are refering to is a 2.1 big bore and there are several out there the 2.4 sleeve is also .060 thick same as lsj and you can run a lsj head on a 2.4 no problem all you need is a le5 head gasket and custom pistons you can use stock length rods

So for example, I currently own an '07 LE5, does this mean that I could get an LSJ head and it'll work no problems with just custom pistons? What if I already have the 2.4 zzp turbo kit installed? What modifications would I have to make to that to make the LSJ head work fine? What kinda benefits would come from having an LSJ head on my LE5 with the ZZP kit?

Sorry, I'm still learning about all this stuff.. Somebody help meh!! :cssNET:

mrbelvedere 02-23-2013 12:24 PM

it will bolt on just fine and work on a car that dosent have vvt

so that opens up the stroker/hybrids we can do such as
bore stroke
94mm x 98mm = 2.7
94mm x 94mm = 2.6
94mm x 86mm = 2.4

how much cause i would do this for my sunfire drag car help get the 62mm turbo spinning sooner and have loads of tq.

GoodLuckBro 02-23-2013 01:48 PM

So it would bolt up to my '07 LE5 with no problems? I'd like to get a little bit more power out of this zzp kit.

mrbelvedere 02-23-2013 02:07 PM

you have vvt head and pcm the lsj isent vvt so just because it will bolt up dosent mean it ill work

GoodLuckBro 02-23-2013 03:46 PM

That's what I was confused about. So you can only go L61/LSJ. What was stated before about the LE5 hybrids. I'm not completely understanding.

cavi2sunfire 02-23-2013 04:31 PM

The LE5 hybrids are going into LSJ cars that don't have VVT using LE5 block and LSJ crank and either custom rods or custom pistons and LSJ head

GoodLuckBro 02-23-2013 04:33 PM

Ah, so I'm SOL?

if you car is factory Le5 you can take your Le5 and make it a 2.1 or a 2.7 or a 2.3 but you have to stay with your factory head because because the pcm controls the vvt in your engine by not using the vvt I cant tell you if it will run correctly or not due to the pcm freaking out

you can use the lsj head on a Le5 in a non vvt car

Ah, I got you now. I'm definitely thinking about going hybrid but I just wasn't sure exactly what was going on. Thanks man!

wow some awesome info in this thread. i am currently a turbo lsj running a basically stock motor after blowing the cylnder walls out of my built one. but heres what im thinking i have an lsj head, crank, and rods from my old motor and think it would be awesome to do a hybrid build in the mean time. its going to to be turbod so what block should i start looking to get for this build? i have a zzp trans and spec clutch so im not looking to have to change trannys or clutches. i wanna use my lsj head, lsj crank, and lsj clutch so whats the best block to use?

Trying to figure this out. In the process of building a delta hybrid. 06 2.4 LE5 bottom and 06 L61 2.2 head.

Question on the reluctor rings. From what I've gathered all 02-06 L61's use the 7x reluctor and the LE5 being gen2 has the 58x reluctor.

Are the delta L61 different and might have the 58x reluctor. How would I be able to tell and what am I looking for to identify each ring?

We are planning on getting the crank trigger if the rings are different between the motors but find it easier if I can use the stock ring.

be careful with what L61 engines you buy.. the older (2005 and earlier) ecotecs found in j-bodies have a 6+1 trigger pattern. this will not work with the delta PCM.

also, the older L61 engines.. the reluctor ring is CAST into the counterweight on the end of the crankshaft. There is no removing it without putting the crank on a lathe and lathing it down.

Are we talking J-body AND early delta or just J-body?

SSfamilywagon 03-12-2013 01:35 AM

I been doing more research on all the forums out there and it seems the ALL L61's are the 7x reluctor.

So for our build in a Cobalt we will be using the crank trigger on the LE5 bottom

Is the trigger cast into the crank like in the J-bodies?

SSfamilywagon 03-12-2013 11:37 AM

Yes. All the L61 I keep reading about have the crank ring welded in the crank. Non removable. The gen2 motors have removable crank ring and are all 58x, but I've read the LE5 and LSJ have different size rings and not exactly the same. So a spacer is needed swapping those blocks.

Philzoot did one of these builds.

subbed, and will post future build soon

2.2 longblock/LSJ Externals

Back to the original question - I have an LSJ 06 that has had the typical ring land breakage. I have honed the damage out of the cylinders, but they are about .002" over (3.388). Can I take a 2.2L long block (available and cheap) and swap all the LSJ externals onto it? I am thinking this would have too high a compression ratio for the SC. I read a thread about adding a SC to a 2.2L car, no mention of changing pistons or cams. Anyone give a short answer on this?

Tjolley 07-09-2013 11:58 PM

Dependin on wat 2.2 u get.
U will need the newer l61
Pull the crank out and reclock the reluctor wheel and slap ur lsj head on and now u have a 2.2 lsj just be carfull they arnt very strong.

mrbelvedere 07-10-2013 12:38 AM

just pull it out and fix it right

Tjolley 07-10-2013 09:06 AM

Ya its proly cheaper to get a set of mrb sleeves than to try and get the l61 to work

bLu04dd 10-13-2013 04:47 AM

A 2.7 stroker TVS sounds so tempting...perhaps my next build :D

current purebred LSJ swapped 04 Cavalier here. Timing the trigger wheel to be exact isn't easy but not too bad. Also a thing to note is the crank pulleys are different between the engines. An LSJ cp is flat on the front so the trigger wheel fits nicely. The LE5 and L61 cp's have bumps on the 3 arms that reach out so you have to compensate with washers or something. The good thing is you can just swap pulleys, just keep in mind the L61 only has 5 ribs vs the LE5/LSJ 6 rib pulley (L61 requires you go cut off a rib when using the LSJ belt if you don't swap the cp out).

I cant wait to see what this engine can do tuned with my mods. Jbody by sight, Cobalt by flight! lol
