Question Wrapped Intake...

Just curious, does anybody on here have their intake piping wrapped in a heat resistant type of wrapping? Just curious of whether or not it has any benefits and if so, what would they be? A friend on mine has his intake wrapped. I noticed that his supercharger whines a little louder than mine does but does it help the IAT and IAT2 teps any??

Does help out a %. The exact number is hard to tell. But you want your charge air to be cold as possible.

thought it was meant to keep the heat in... like with your exhaust.. why would you want to keep the heat in your intake??? makes no sense. you want heat to disapate especially when it goes into your engine

Same concept man. But the intake is pulling in outside air. You want to keep it that temp instead of letting engine bay heat heat it up.

btw- Your ass got banned and your typing????????????

u can write under ur name what ever u want

and wrapping it prevents hot engine temp from soakin on the intake piping and eventually making it warm

OK, i was looking into doing that cause I have felt my intake after some fairly short drives and it is warm to the touch. Thanks for answering my question for me.

Also, what type of wrapping did you use for yours?(Super SS)

i guess you spell banned with 3 n's??? cant read?

hmmmm i have a functional cf hood. that helps with the heat. but it makes sense for a stock hooded balt to do that. that heavy steel hood would hold heat pretty good

header wrap...since its made to with-stand heat from the headers, works best on aluminum..

Yea, and if I were to leave it on I wouldn't be able to wrap a lot of it anyway. Unless I got 90% of the way taking it off but by that time I might as well take the whole thing off anyway. Plus I do need to adjust it just a little cause it is rubbing just a teeny bit.

Isn't IAT1 measured at the MAF sensor? The tubing is all after the MAF, (at least on the SS/SC) so why would intake wrapping drop your IAT1?

I can see it dropping intake temperatures, but i think it may show more result in IAT2 for SS/SC since the MAF is not influenced by wrapping.

thats because your moving air thro it....doing things of that nature tend to have a cooling effect...

DUH.

not related to your heat wrap.

back on topic here.

heat wrap has proven to have an effect....a slight one, but one none the less.

it keeps excessive engine heat from heat soaking the intake material, thus lessening heat transfer to the inner, traveling air....thus lowering your AIT's.

for the 10min it takes to do this, and the $20 that you might invest, its worth while.

Theres no way this helps at all. My IAT1s stay MAYBE 2 degrees higher than ambient. If you could wrap your intake and get your IAT1 to be AT ambient you might see a .0000003 HP increase.

I mean if your argument is that the MAF sensor has like 2 feet of piping after it then I just have a few things to say. When I do pump designs here at work temperature drop of our CL2 gas is measured in the 100s of feet. So if you start out with CL2 at 100 degrees, and you have to go 3 MILES inside piping that is exposed to ambient air, you MIGHT have a 6 degree drop in temp by the time you get there.

Your arguement about lowering IATs. My comment stands, no matter what you do, theres no way you are going to go below ambient. Since you are only 2 degrees away from ambient your car isnt really going to respond to a 2 degree drop in IAT1. This is just my opinion.

Isn't the IAT1 sensor on top of the blower right past the throttle body..?

You can get the header wrap from Autozone, I think they sell like 50ft or so for $50. Or Summit Racing probably sells it too.
