Ok a lower theristat will acualy gain some power because the lower the motor temp the more efficint the motor is to a point. I did this in my 99 camaro and its a dyno proven 5whp. You will not throw a code for running at 180 degrees my car runs at 187-195 stock as it is and never budges. so your fine dont lisen to these guys.
But I dont think you can buy one, you migh some how have a stock one modified.

Or, u could maybe try Water Wetter by Redline. I think Pepboys sells it and it suppose to bring your average engine temp down a little. The only trick is that u might have to drain your fluid first...add this stuff...then refill. Since we don't have a cap on the radiator and just that overflow bottle is the only reason you have to drain. Might help with da heat. I'm also thinkin my balt runs a little to hot for my taste. About 197-210F...and more like 210 if i'm stuck in traffic....Tone

hey i just ordered a 160 thermostat for my 2.2 cobalt because i live in Texas and ive sadly been hitting the 219-221 degrees coolant. so i ordered the 160. Look on ebay if anyones looking for one and the store lingenfelter sells it. mine should be in this week so ill update yall with the results on if theres an engine code thrown and if it helps. From what i have read the car is suppose to come with a 180 thermostat stock, but i have extra mods on it and when i drive in traffic, my coolant really hits the 219 mark which thinking about it going almost 40 over the thermostat cant be good. But like i said i live in texas so its always hot. lol
oh i didnt notice how long ago this was posted... haha my bad any input from anyone on this tho?

hey everyone i just got my thermostat in today and will be installing it when my car is completley cooled down and give it a couple of runs and post up some results for everyone as much as for driving it for a day. and if any performance was felt or if it cooled down enough.

The rubber seal on my stock thermostat came off of the metal a little bit, not allowing the thermostat to close all the way. This resulted in the car taking much longer to get to the factory operating temp. It would also make the temp drop down to about 165ish at idle. It DID give me a CEL saying that coolant was below operating temperature. So I am willing to bet that a lower temperature thermostat would throw a CEL..

ok everyone so far ive installed it on the new 160 thermostat, and ive driven about 50 miles to let the computer adjust to it a little. ive put a new batch or coolant in as well. so far, everything is running perfect, even tho it says 160, on mine it stays around 179-181 which is perfect. as for performance gains, theres really nothing huge but theres a noticable difference of the engine being much more peppier. even when it gets hot, the engine is still willing to pull hard. there has been no cel so far as well. it all looks great so far but its only a first day. ill post up again after a few days.
IMO this is a good investment (or for me i guess)
