08 Cobalt LS burning coolant

My cobalt has started to burn coolant (approx. 2L in 2 months). I can't see any leaks anywhere, I checked the rad hoses and clamps and they're fine, and there is never a puddle under the car regardless of how long I leave the car.

I'm stumped. Last night was the first time the fan stayed on after I shut the car off, and I only drove the car less than 5km. The temp light hasn't come on at all. Any ideas? I have an appointment at the dealer to get them to run the dye through it to see what they can find.

Pull your dipstick and see if the oil looks milky. Also look under your oil cap. Unfortunately if you don't see any leaks anywhere it sounds like you may have a headgasket on it's way out.

Oh, and nice to see another local on the forum. Pretty sure I've seen you on lowmo.

I think your right. I've noticed the oil kind of milky the past few changes. Is it a big job to pull the head off of these motors?

My suggestion is having your system pressurized to see in fact where the coolant is going. Has your exhaust been smelling funny or showing in different colors?

I haven't noticed any real smell, but it does seem to be smoking a bit more on startup than usual.

I'd say head gasket almost certainly. That's a lot of lost coolant with no obvious leak! Plus the signs of water in oil.

You could try a pressure test to confirm. Or just run the engine with the coolant cap off and look for small bubbles coming out of cooling system.

Burning coolant? lmao..Listen if you had a blown HG, you'd know it. You'd have white smoking pouring out that the tail pipe. You want to know for sure? Buy the kit that you mix with your coolant and if it turns a certain color you will know if theres a combustion leak or not. It sounds to me u have a leak somewhere and you can't find it and your starting to go crazy about a Headgasket. If you don't know, take it to a shop.
