2.2L Ecotec
2.2L Ecotec
Simple enough question. Any one have any problems with the 2.2L Cobalts? I am very interested in buying one, once I sell my car I must get a new car...so thanks for any info..
All I heard is the clutch goes quick...?

Appreciate it...I heard with heavy shifting it dies pretty quick...which I ll be doing a mixture of hard and granny shifting, haha. I actually suspected good news from Ecotec.
This is a good summary for me though, so If i mod my engine within 2 years i dont have to worry about much goin wrong...
I would work on interior first anywho...
Thanks

I own a '05 cobalt w/ a 2.2L and a 4 spd auto with O/D. At this time I don't know whether to get a B&M ratchet shifter for the 4 spd auto, or a 2.2/134, 5 spd manual swap from an '04 Cav. I want to keep it a daily driver, but lay down the hp. when I need it. My goal is 250 bhp, which will be no problem at all. Just time and money to reach my goal.
thanks.
thanks.
i got the 5sp w/ a twm short shifter and 24,100 miles on her and had it since april. my clutch is still going solid like when i first had it and i do shift pretty hard you could say.

Actualy to tell you the truth. The only problem I have is that every time I hit a pot hole or a simple bump on the road I hear alot of clattering in my front suspension, but that is complete my fault. To tell you the truth the 2.2 is an incredibly strong platform. I'm not saying it is the best, but GM did something good for a change with the econo platform.
The 2.2L is fine and can surprise you with its responsiveness in the Cobalt. Plus, get it up past 5K and it'll push you back in the seat with the power surge. As for me: no problems so far with a mixed driving style (though I've only been past 5K maybe twice). Going to probably hit 7K miles before the week is out.
friend of mine has a 2003 Cavalier coupe with a 2.2L Ecotec/4speed auto. In a little over 2 years, he has put over 100,000 miles on it. Has had NO problems with engine or transmission in that time.
I have had no problems with my car in the 26,000 miles i've driven since june 05. MY brother says that these engines are damn near bulletproof. He was telling me that the only problems that they see are from inexperienced drivers. Stands to reason since this is an entry level car that most inexperienced drivers will be in them.

yeah, the 2.2L isn't anywhere near the SS/SC, but it's fun to make quick blasts up to 85 or so... it's fun to throw around and it's got a frisky powerband. Sure we don't have 205hp, but i'll take what the 2.2L has. It's more nuts than my old 2.2L OHV engine had.

30-35mpg at all times, that is what I am talking about. Starts first crank everytime, idles smooth as silk, pulls smoothly all the way to redline, shuts off like hitting a wall at 104mph when the governed speed is attained.
