2.2L Factory Rev Limiter - 2008 Cobalt XFE L61

Hi Everyone,

Hoping someone can answer. I currently have a 2006 Cobalt SS 2.4L 5 Speed that I race every weekend in my local 1/3 mile asphalt oval. I recently purchased a 2 Door, L61 2.2L 2008 Cobalt LT. I have looked all over the forum but haven't been able to find. This 2.2L 5 Speed car has the 3.63 Final, and I am trying to determine on a stock tune L61 what is the max rev limiter? I know my LE5 has roughly a 6,700RPM Rev Limit. Does anyone know in second gear what the car will rev out to? I am not allowed to tune the car as per the rules, so I am hoping a 2.2L shares a high rev limiter and will work for my oval track.

Please only answers of people who know!

Thank you!

i just had a look at a factory tune from the hp tuners repository. looks like the rev limiter is 6500.

using a gear calculator ( https://www.tremec.com/calculadora.php ), 2nd gear should top out at 66 mph, assuming a 25" tall tire.

Hi Sharkey,

That’s terrific. If you’re ever looking for a great calculator, I use the Gear Ratio calculator on GrimmJeeper.com a lot too. I run a 225/55R16 on the drive tires so I should be able to net around 67mph. Just out of curiosity, how high with stock valve springs have people been able to spin these motors safely? And assuming you put a good set of valve springs in it, what kinda rpm would the bottom
end tolerate?

you can safely rev them to 7000 completely stock, past that i would recommend valve springs. 7500 is the limit of the balance shafts, above that you need to delete them, or they run the risk of exploding (they spin 2x engine speed). i cant say ive ever seen a rod failure from high rpm, however these engines do use powder metal rods, so it could become an issue.
