2.2L vs 2.4L
well fully bolted you'll probably still have a hard time breaking too far into the 15's, and very well could still be running 16's. The 4 speed in the cobalts really sucks ass, and is a total killer for performance. Having been there, my recomendation is to plan a big build, or don't waste your money.

tuned..? no idea... sure it could be done w/ tune & 2.4 IM & TB...

i hav the 2.4L manifold swap, injen intake, and i'm gettin a new full exhaust header back, stage 1 cams, lightweight pulleys, 75shot, then way down the road eagle rods and weiso pistons
a fully bolted 2.2L with cams does 175-180whp proven, a 2.4L has 171hp at the crank
i think his name on here is NWAE Cobalt and he's fully bolted and he runs low 15s if not high high 14s

this.
no one said those were races, i said i can keep up just like u did when u said u kept up with a 2.4 auto. i used to race locally n won a good share of them not saying my car is amazing nor am i saying that it can rape other cars im just saying i think that a 2.2 auto can keep up with some cars prolly still a lot slower then most manual cars but can keep up.

I like how "most cars" now becomes "some cars..."
if you keep up with a mustang or a G37, they're either broken, or not racing lol.
ok some most who cares what word i used i was just giving my oppinion y does it seem like ur trying to start ****? if im wrong just say dude ur wrong n explain otherwise dont say something negative. u have ur oppinion from ur experiences and i have my oppinion from my leave it at that
you're new to cars I assume?
isn't he manual? he also has cams and some headwork though. full bolt ons and a tune will be high 15's on an AUTOMATIC cobalt, since that's what we're talking about. Can't be compared to a manual.

My buddy Derek has a 2.2 manual with I/H/DP/E/IM/TB/T and my buddy Matt's 2.4 manual with I/H/E/T pulls him in third.
Oh yeah they're both pretty high up in the N/A top drag times. 14.7 vs a 14.5.
No 2.4 or 2.2 will pull a G35 let alone a G37, without forced induction. I ran the 2.2 with my G sedan, the slowest version of the G ever made, and I still pulled him.

The truth is, the 2.2 Cobalt is "peppy", not fast but is great for what it is and how much it costed.
Against cars in its class, it does good as it has a great HP/TQ balance.
There is no weak or strong spots, seems very linear.
Just as a comparison, the new Civic finally gets 140hp, but has 8-10 hp less than our 2.2 but has a lot less torque. Not talking about their premium Si model, and if we did we can then look at the 2.0 turbo stacking up against their Si.
Low end 1.8 and 2.0 Sentras, the Mazda 3, any Corolla except the older XRS 1.8 (the 2.4 is only equal which is lame), Matrix XR, Celica GT, and so on are easy to pass.
A lot of SUVs too.
Neon SXTs and Malibu V-6s seem equal, the Dodge Charger and Caliber 3.5 loses by a little and so on.
Is it going to go up against the Mazda Speed, SRT-4, Camaro 5.7 or Corvette? No.
But for the money, and the class it is in, it is peppier than most grocery getters.
So yes, I understand what you mean by your statement, as there are more grocery getters and SUVs on the road than performance cars.
I like my car a lot, and 0-60 in 8 seconds is fine.
I am finishing all mods to my wife's Sunfire before touching my Cobalt.
She has a full exhaust, 4:2:1 header, ground wires, CAI, front and rear strut tower braces and stainless steel brake lines.
I raced a 1996 Nissan Maxima when the Sunfire did not have a CAI nor header and he barely creeped by. I looked it up and his 0-60 is 7.6 seconds stock, the Sunfire is 8.4 seconds stock. Neither car is fast. But, it was a race from a stop and can give you an idea of what just a catback exhaust and high flow cat will help. I bet if I raced him now, it would be an easy pass as it picked up a lot of up and go from the header and CAI. It is probably a 0-60 around 7.4 seconds now. Yes, it is a guestimate, and yes the guy raced because he gave me the thumbs up when the race ended. He did not think the Sunfire would have kept up nearly as good as it did.
The new Ecotec is even better, stock 0-60 in 8 seconds (for the automatic coupe 8.4 for the automatic sedan). Definitely no race car here, just a fun commuter.
If you want fast, get the SC parts off a crashed 2.0 or get a turbo kit.
I get bolt-ons only because they make the car a little more fun, and since I have to drive it every day, I see it as worth $300 here or $100 there.
With the current mods the Sunfire should only be slightly slower to cars such as the Celica GTS, Eclipse 3.0, and Tiburon 2.7. If I got stage 2 cams and HP tuners, I should be able to pass these guys too.
But, is 6.8-7 second 0-60 fast? No. Sure would surprise a few people though.
To me that is fun.
I know someone will say I am 1 to 2 tenths off here or there, but honestly it does not matter as I know I will have this Sunfire fully bolted and tuned and will be very happy with it.
I am saving the last money for the Trak Lite 15" rims. I want to get a tire/ rim package when I need new tires and not now as I am good on tires for a while.
