Exclamation 300 degrees???

After hitting something, a few weeks ago, while driving on the highway in my 06 Cobalt Lt at night my coolant temp was at 300 degrees?!?!? Would this cause my head gasket to blow??? it is at the dealer right now i have already had the rear main seal replaced along with the oil pans for the engine & transmission (auto). What would this also cause, i had to have the radiator replaced by insurance already from the.... accident.

btw. the car had no warning that it was running so hot!!!!

nope i had someone else with me who saw it too.... 300 degrees F

i think it reaches up to about 324 if i am correct... it started to melt the padding behind my engine, on the firewall....

anything over 230 is pretty bad, i would imagine at 300 it wouldn't be a good thing i don't now what would happen so i won't speculate, but it can't be good

well hold on... i dont think thats THHHATTT hot... the 2.2s get hot anway and its not unusual for people to have temps of 235 with the AC off in the city. Dont think it would cause as much damage as everyone is saying. but it can be to good for an extended period of time..

but who knows i could be totally wrong

to those saying it isnt that hot... it is. I hate going above 200. In summer traffic i have hit 225 and thats when i open the windows and crank the heater full blast. watch that number drop 35* in about 90 seconds.

I am surprised that the pistons didn't expand to the point of stopping the motor.

300*F is very hot and it could have caused damage to the engine. I have accidentally ran an all aluminum engine without water and I'm sure it was even hotter and it survived. So you may get lucky!?

Hope that nothing got damaged!

300 is very hot for these motors to run. I obviously dont know the whole story as your post only describes part of it, BUT i would assume (being a technician myself) that you hit something (stated in your post) that ruined your radiator causing a coolant look or coolant flow issue. The dealership you turned your vehicle into diagnoes the leak/flow issue. After repair was made vehicle continued to overheat due to initial overheat when impact was made on original radiator. A headgasket issue is hard to detect when a radiator has been smashed, unless you clearly state "my vehicle was severely overheated". Aluminum heads are not difficult to crack when under severe heat.

not if the coolant was not flowing or was empty.

Then engine burns fuel at ~1200* so without the coolant in the engine the metal heats up fast!!!
