My understanding is that all you need to hydrolock is enough water in one of your cylinders to cover the bottom, and cause the piston to be unable to compress due to the water in the cylinder.

so i guess technically all you need is a good spoonful or 2, just at the right time.

that setup is going to cause no end of headaches unless you get the fender plastic back in there....

It is not a very good idea to run this setup like this. Your best bet is to go with the short ram. The filter is exposed to too much regardless of the water (stones, sticks, leaves, snow, ice, etc). Any intake is a vacuum. (at least 14.7 hg while the engine is at idle). You are asking for trouble. As a matter of fact I think I would remove that picture from the web for fear GM might see it and void any warranty (if you still have it).

Don't the stock fender wells fit? They fit perfectly with the AED Body Kit on my Grand AM GT1.

a cai and sri are different... injen can be both...

i would put the fender on, or get the shield... if you can put the fender liner back on, make sure you do right away

Tada

Heres the most likely sequence of events.

1. The amount if moisture this steup will inhale will screw up the MAF Sensor. = Code

2. Mess up the throttle body, cause remember its electronic not cable pulled.

3. Cause corosion in the intake ports of the head and thottle butterfly seat from excess moisture when the car is not driven. (More so if the filter is wet (soaked) and as it dries the moisture evaporates up into the intake.)

4. Even if the water is not enough to Hydrolock the motor (bent rods, busted piston crowns) you're effecively raising the compression of the motor. Subsuqently putting more strain on the pistons, head gasket, and valve seats. Because of raised compression possible detonation, or adjusted timing because of the knock sensor thus negating any performace gain. The computer does all it can to save itself, but eventually enough moisture will overcome the computers adjustments.

Quite correct. Something more than the quench area volume of one cylinder is all the water you need. At idle, it will probably just stop the engine, but generally a situation that will cause this is one where you're blasting through a puddle at higher RPM.

You can use the GMPP, a short ram intake, as a CAI by making it a ram air system. My experience with CAI systems on Gen I Neons led me to the decision to do exactly that.

Holy cripes... definately go for the short ram setup man... that filter's gonna catch all kinda hell and not last long at all... there's like a 1-2hp difference between an CAI and a short ram... especially GM's setup that has the heat shield...

sell that intake and get another one...

Yup. http://www.aempower.com/ViewCategory.aspx?CategoryID=20

Note: The site says that it is not for use on vehicles with forced induction.

Uh duh this is the 2.2 performance section.... NOT Supercharged.....

Use the water cover get the inner fenderliners back on the car and install a bypass valve and you will be safe. The tires will put more water on that filter than the hole in the front cover... Plus any and all crap on the road will be beating the snot out of you intake and filter.

Same here. You can never be too safe in regards to saving your engine...unless it involves the stock airbox.

These cold air intakes on the 2.2 sit about the same position as the stock air box. the only thing to worry about is getin water high enough. In this case itz wide open to more debrie an so forth. Ive seen the water resistant air filter cover, but if a big splash is what you are worried about, then they also have a splash gaurd (i tink Injen sells it) that could act as the fender, but you still have to be extremely carefull anyways.

i have a Injen CAI and a body kit. we got rubber mat and attached it to the body kit and the oem plastic sheilds to prevent water from the tire. the front is totally open but the airfilter sets up and is almost behind the bumper so im not to worried about water from the front.... but i would do something to fill in that wheel well

I just ordered an AEM intake and was really disappointed when I got it and realized that it was the short intake. The place that I bought it from falsely advertised that the intake came with all of the tubing but it didn't...so now I'm basically using my stock tubing and an AEM filter. Anybody know where you can get just the tubing?

Very nice. I wish there was room to mount the bypass before the MAF on the 2.0 intake.

I have read that tubing can be found at Checker or Autozone. I would try to return the AEM intake and get the Injen or another intake that is what you really want.
