Base model tyre questions

After doing some searching on this site and others and not getting an answer, I decided to go ahead and ask.

I'm looking to put some 17"x8" rims on my base model 2006 Cobalt but there doesn't look to be enough clearance, especially on the rear. Is there?

Which tyre size will come closest to matching the diameter of the stock tyre? Ther guy at WheelsNext said 240/45-17. Does this sound right?

I also plan on using the Eibach Sportlines with Bilstein shocks (when they're made available) what would be the maximum tyre size I could use with that setup?

What wold be the best offset? I read somewhere that 40 would be best but you guys would obviously know better from experience.

Thanks,

Bob
