is there a blow off valve for the 2.2? if so, what is the purpose of them, and what performance difference is there?

This one wins for most entertaining. I'm used to them in the 2.0 forums, but this is the first one I've seen asking about one for a N/A motor.

Dude, the sound runs at a frequency that manipulates the air into a much higher density, so that 10 times the amount of oxygen is in one spot, so its just like having an actual turbo at like 10psi!! for your saving like 4 grand by buying this kit!!!!

DO IT!!

Evidentally he doesn't have general boost knowledge so don't get on his case.

To answer your question:

Blow off valves aren't car specific. You could actually take a blow off valve from another stock vehicle (example: a DSM) and use it on your vehicle. Basically, a blow off valve's job is to release pressure from the charge pipe to prevent compressor surge on the turbo (or centrifugal supercharger).

This is what a stock 1st generation DSM blow off valve looks like (top right brown looking part):

The top small piece that sticks out (pointy looking piece) is where you would put a vacuum line to. The silver piece that sticks out (opening on the end) is where the air releases through. On the inside of a blow off valve, it opens and closes according to boost pressure. When you release your foot off the gas, your blow off valve will open so it releaves the pressure from the charge piping. The more pressure you give before you release, generally, the louder it is because there is more air pressure being released.

Performance with them...well...that's the thing, blow off valves don't really serve as a "performance" item, like one item will gain you power over another one. When purchasing an BOV, you're mainly looking for 2 things: A. How effective it works B. The way it sounds and C. The price. Unless you buy some rinky dink no name blow off valve that is known for leaking air when (leaking air = loosing pressure = boost leak = loosing boost max), you're mainly looking for how they sound and price.

Now to the nitty gritty...

Since you are not turbocharged (or centrifugally charged), you putting this on your vehicle serves no purpose. Buying one now would be pointless and useless.

Hopefully this answers all your questions.

I hear all of ya. I am so sick of this BOV stuff. I will admit when i had a 1st gen DSM i ran my BOV to open atmosphere, just cause all the ricers around this area. But yeah, enough of BOV ?'s

You guys need to seriously grow up. People ask questions because they don't know...how you would like it if you asked a question on here and people got on your case because you didn't search or cause you plainly didn't know the answer to it.

There are plenty of people who didn't grow up around cars or just don't know as much as majority of the members here...there are still some of you who think each modification you do will gaurantee you a certain amount of HP, so enough is enough. Shut up and help people or don't post. If you're sick of something, don't waste your time with it.

wow you guys are not much help. i asked because i didnt know about them. thank you NJHK for the only worthy response to this thread. i do appriciate your response, but seriously guys im not the master mechanic that the rest of you are. this is actually my first car that is made for performance, so ive never had to do any research like this before. I had respect for the members here and had faith that you would answer my question with respect and dignity, not to make fun of my ignorance. do grow up and may all your posting be merry.

No problem man.

I fully remember what it was like to start out and have to ask questions (even if they seemed dumb). Fact is, there is no dumb question you can ask if you don't know the answer. Asking questions is apart of learning and people need to realize that.

Anyone could search for something and get an idea but maybe some people want a better explination like from someone like myself who privided a full answer to each of his question with a picture too.

Anyways...spyder, were you able to understand what I said fully?
