Talking Check Engine Light

So my check engine light has been on for a while and I just finally got tired of it and decided to go to a local auto parts store who would read the code for free. It turns out I need a new thermostat. I don't really want to pay the $100 labor or so to get this fixed and I was just wondering if it could be done by myself? I don't have much experience but I am always up for learning. Any instructions or advice would be greatly appreciated including just being told to not even try it! Thanks!
