Exhaust help
Exhaust help
Ok guys, so a while back I had a shop install my Tsudo exhaust.....
recently i've been hearing an exhaust leak. i took it in today they jacked it up and using a stethoscope they found nothing. thing is, the leak noise only occurs when the exhaust is cold or under throttle. the guys didn't check it under any throttle, only at idle.
ideas as to where this leak could be? stock flex pipe?

Sounds like flex pipe to me, I see it at work the engine moves a little pulls on the pipe and blam you a leak but at idle you won't see or hear it, i'm shocked they didn't check it under throttle.
and you didnt call me :P
i would check flex pipe, easy other way to check, pull the bolts connecting the sections (header to dp, dp to exhuast) and pull the gasket, if you see black extending in one section from all the way in to out you have a leak there.
reason it could be only cold is because it heats up and seals by expanding...

got the new dp on the way. i noticed a carbon buildup on one side of the flex pipe and i think the cat's making a rattle, so just jumped the gun and bought the goodie.

welll i have the new down pipe on the way, haven't had the time to take it to a shop since it started making the noises evident in the recording. but from what I can tell it's definitely indicated it's coming from the cat.
Thursday I receive the down pipe, it'll either go on that night or the next day at the exhaust shop or by my own hands. lol

yes the hiss....blah. that's the first noise that came on mine and is still present. at idle wouldn't hiss but under acceleration it does it.
then the higher rattle came into play from my flex pipe the best i can tell, and the marble-like rattle from the cat.
when your engines cold, go out there and use the right side of your right hand, and kinda act like a hammer and hit the downpipe, just under the cat. let me know if you hear a rattle. i wasn't able to get a rattle out of hitting any pipe besides the downpipe.
the following video is a 2.2 s10 with a bad cat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIqD9Xakpy0

and thanks for the call on my vid. i think my prob started with the cat, which then stressed my flex pipe more creating the issue there.
Alright so two of my three sounds are now gone after installing the new down pipe.
The flex pipe was in fact busted, and the cat was bad.
anyways, you'll see a post of my review for the CA down pipe in a bit. while everything went in, the craftsmanship of the down pipe is sub par.
Ok well I got the 2.5" Cobalt Addiction Downpipe w/ cat today.
I must say....with exception of the vibrant cat and the vibrant flex, the craftsmanship of this product isn't that great.
the welds are thick but are kin to what you'd expect a first year automotive student to do. to compliment the shotty welding, the little bits of metal that flew off during welding are scattered all over the outside of the pipe, and in the threading of the first O2 sensor. the second O2 bung was positioned in a manner that the stock O2 sensor couldn't go in, so we had to plug the bung and add another bung a little closer to the cat.
then another suspicion was raised by the exhaust shop owner, which believes that CA actually used MILD STEEL to build my down pipe and NOT STAINLESS STEEL as they advertise. *he mentioned this during the welding he had to do*
I then thought that I wasn't sent the gaskets/bolts etc, but reality was they were sent USPS in a package I wasn't expecting which came later in the day.
All in all, I'm considering this a bad product experience. While yes it functions, it does not live up to the expectations the description established to be nor was the superior craftsmanship shown.
Some may ask why I haven't contacted CA since then? The answer is, I shouldn't have been shipped a sub par product in the first place. After a week of waiting for something I could have had made locally for cheaper I feel that any more time spent on letting CA "get it right" is a waste, especially considering the turn around time on products. Always been willing to wait for the quality stuff the first time around, but it's absurd to wait and have delivered a sub par product.
