Sounds like a horrible mechanic.

Water pump is driven by the balance shaft chain. if the front seal of the pump fails it can fill the crankcase with coolant. Mechanic is right on the money. Its much more common for them to leak externally though.

Does the water pumps front seal allow coolant to pass? Water pumps I've dealt with in the past don't have water flowing through the side of the pump closest to the pully/gear.

Ive yet to see a GM waterpump where the shaft seal doesnt keep coolant in. I cant really imagine a mechanically driven pump that doesnt have coolant on one side of the shaft seal.
