Hypothetically....

So a few days ago, i posted about getting a 2.2 auto cobalt.
Hypothetically, i can upgrade the internals and have a potentially powerful car - and with boost and a tune, faster than the SS turbo?
Also, im thinking about buying a second scrap SS or sport so i can get the disk brakes. How hard will it be to switch from drums to disks?

Thanks,
Chris

**EDIT**

When i say boost, i mean a procharger

get a an ss/sc for like 12k easy. if you're serious about tuning/modding that's the best way to go with the market looking so good.

personally i think our auto trans are ftl.

and btw trans can hold 350 whp

auto trans: 250whp. so no it can't be as fast as a turbo with stock trans at least.

1) yea, you can. many have done it, myself included
2) cheaper to just buy the parts you need, and not a whole car, but its not really worth the hassle. theres a big brake kit that converts the rear drums to rotors for like $900 if you want

blackbolt, where did you get those numbers? the auto trans is rated higher than the manual trans is.... its rated for 315tq, but there are members coming up on 400wtq on stock auto trans....

ive heard you can either get an auto trans cooler, or just get a race trans to fix the problem.

haha..well a race trans would be several thousand dollars, whereas a auto trans cooler is like $20-$50 depending on size and style

True, i just read on the forced induction page that a trans cooler is fine, as long as i get a trans tune. very nice
but what seems to bee the best way to boost a 2.2? ive heard a lot of great stuff about pro chargers, then ive heard a lot of good stuff about turbo.

Well, technically our torque converters are not rated for a ton of trq. Especially not for extended drag racing for sure. Lots of people have gotten away with 350+ whp on the auto with no problems at all. If you really wanted to play it safe, you could just get it rebuilt with a beefier stall converter for launching harder. 99% of people are never going to put their transmission into ANY kind of threat because you'd have to be making some serious power to ever break it. 315 gearbox torque is what it's rated for a maximum, and we all know we can get away with a little more if you baby it.

Now, the F23 can break all to **** if you don't know how to shift. It's mostly user error when they break.

Transmission coolers aren't going to make you any safer from mechanical breakdown of the tranny, it will just keep the fluid very cool even when you're making back to back passes so you don't fry the fluid when you launch the auto.

Personally, I would recommend the M62 off the SS/SC. You can upgrade to that for under 1,500.

an M62 is a supercharger. our trannies are either a 4T45e (for automatics) or a F23 (for manuals)
