Ignition Systems

Ok so Ive been poking around on the forums this evening and I found that there is not a whole lot of discussion about ignition modules/systems for the 2.2L I am a total newb when it comes to modding my car for performance. I just want to know what is available, pros and cons of system, who has what, who recommends what, and what mods (if any) should be considered before getting an ignition system.

Technically theres not a lot of modifications you to can do your igntion system right now unless you wanna convert to the distributor sytle ignition, but unless you got enough power to back up it you dont really need it. The compression sensetive igntion on the ecotec is capable of handling power up to around 450ish, cant say exact number but its up there.

Yea i saw the MSD distributor on TTR but was looking for some other alternative. The only other thing I came across someone saying that Nology had a system for the 2.2 but couldnt find it.

You don't neccessarily have to have power to back up a better ignition system. A better spark is always a good thing no matter how much power you have.

The ignition system is probably one of the most neglected areas for our cars but for good reason. Installation is a bit involved, you need more than just the ignition module to do it. If you really wanted to have a better ignition, you would have to get the MSD DIS-2 system.

Read this: How To: Install an MSD DIS-2 Ignition

That should give you a good idea of what is involved.

After reviewing the write-ups i think I'll wait on any ignition system upgrades until after my warranty has expired lol

The stock ignition system for this car is really very excellent. And most of the aftermarket systems are not street legal. There isn't too much need to replace it. It will work just fine up to HP levels of 500.

I have the NOLOGY System

I bought the Nology Coil on Plug conversion kit to install on my 2.2L Cobalt. If you e-mail Nology about anything you just get an e-mail telling you to call them. I've seen the system sell for 230 - 280 or so. I bought mine from a site that only had one left. Apparently Nology has discontinued this kit and I bought the last one from a particular company for only $125. It includes the new remote coil with mounting bracket, hotwires and the harness to connect the coil to the ICM. Funny thing is the harness came with a male end for the ICM and my factory ICM has a male end. I have installed the Nology Silver Plugs which are resistorless, but I have to find out if perhaps there is an ICM for the 2.2L Ecotec that has a female connector. Once I get the Nology coil and hotwires hooked up I'll update everyone.
