lt rear disc brakes

Not sure if this is in the right spot but does anybody make a rear disc brake conversion kit for the cobalt lt with 5 lug wheels? If i were to just use parts from an ss what modifications would i need or could i just remove the drums and install the rotors calipers and mounts.

not sure, just go to a junkyard and rip everything off a 2.4 that you might need.

this has been posted before, and it's VERY expensive, and basically just for looks. there's really no benefit performance wise.

well looking at it from a DIY point of view... I'd rather change rear disc pads than drums...

this about sums it up^^^^ aside from looking better and easier to replace.

How long do drums usually last for? Because if and when they go, it seems like that would be the time for an upgrade since you would have to spend money on the replacement anyway.

basically to do the conversion you need new hubs, calipers, rotors, brake lines, and of course the pads. I'm not too sure if there's a difference in the e-brake cables or not.

shoes last a long time, considering most of the braking is done up front. I don't even bother messing with my shoes other than adjusting them and cleaning them until around 80k. The time to switch is just whenever you want to. Replacing your shoes and hardware yourself is only gonna run you $40 tops while the hardware for the swap is going to run you quite a bit more.

Since most of the braking is done up front, there's very little gain to swapping to rear discs other than looks and making it easier to replace. I wouldn't even worry about it unless you do car shows and such or run in a sport where you would have to change your brakes alot.

if you do plan to do the swap, then you're actually pretty lucky since you already have 5-lug wheels. I think all the cobalts that come with rear discs stock are 5-lug(correct me if I'm wrong) so if you had 4-lug then you'd have to swap everything up front to work with 5-lug as well

well that's the BIG brake conversion kit, I don't think you can use those with the stock front brakes as you would have much more breaking power in the back, if you slammed on the brakes, I'm not sure, but it probably wouldn't be good.

Unfortunately that is not all that you need. That is a kit to put bigger brakes on a car that already has disc brakes. You would still need the hubs, etc.

I bet that if you can find a wrecked ss in a junkyard you could probably get everything for less than $500. That is definately the way to go so you can make sure you get every little part you need.

Also, I wonder if there is a proportioning valve in the system somewhere? You may even have to swap master cylinders.

i had a 98 cavalier that i ran pretty hard. at 100000 miles (and after 3 sets of front rotors and 4 sets of front pads) i decided to replace the rear shoes, mainly because i had a gift card, and they only cost 10 bucks after after core exchange. Based on the wear difference between the shoes i was replacing and the new ones, i figure the original shoes would have lasted for 350000 miles. probably not the best story, but, i guess the point is that you shouldn't have to worry about replacing them too often.
