what year is yours?

looks like you have an 05. in that specific case, yeah, it'll work. 05s are kind of a unique year, so if it's a 2.2, you're pretty much stuck with getting an 05 motor

has anyone successfully swapped a 2.0 in a ls? I think there is a lot of issues if you were to do this.

You need to get it touch with someone here who is a GM Tech, Maven and bFaulk are both really knowledgeable.

I would imagine that you would have issues even if it's an ION 2.2. Wiring would have to be a tedious and mostly custom thing, and not everything is going to work. The engine however should go right in and run.

The motors between the ion and cobalt are the same during that year. You wont have an issue. Trust me, I used my ex's 05 ion to re-wire my cobalt when i put my new motor in just to make sure I had everything hooked up correctly.

This is correct, any 05 2.2l eco should work. You may have to switch your manifolds, fuel and ignition components, but that should be it and is fairly standard on a motor swap anyhow.
As a matter of fact i bet you could use any L61 coded 2.2l. You may have to switch out a few sensors and the manifolds, fuel rail and ign, system. but they all should work. The biggest difference i know of for 05 was the lack of a cam sensor and the use of compression sense ignition, but, the 05 engine still had the provision for the cam sensor they just put a cap on it. Most salvage yards have interchange books to help out with this also.

you can use any 2.2 ecotec. thats the key word thou ecotec.. they will all work as long as you change any sensors and those types of things that differ from the ones on your car. believe me i know. i have a 06 and had to get another engine around 8 months ago. mines outta a cavi.

ok cause cause i found a 2005 malibu with a 2.2 and the salvage yard said it will fit and by sensors is it just as easy as taking one off and putting my stock 1 in place or more difficult than that
