My Turbo Build

Car is finally out of warranty, time to turbo it!

Still in the early planning stages but I have most of the parts either bought or lined up to buy in the next couple weeks. Hoping to do the build in april or may.

HP goal is around 220-240whp

Details:

Purchased already:

Garrett T3/T04E 57 trim .63 A/R with stage III wheel
Vulcan turbo manifold
Tial wastegate at around 6psi
HKS SSQ bov
27" Intercooler
ss/sc injectors

Waiting to purchase:

2.5" IC piping/clamps/elbows etc
maf adaptor
oil fittings
misc odds and ends

Going to be using trifecta performance for tuning...ive already got there bolt on tune which i love so ill be trusting vince to tune by turbo as well.

Ill post pics of parts as I get them and as the build progresses....any comments, suggestions, etc please throw them out in this thread.

Oh and the turbo I have is good for like 500hp i believe...i wont be going anywhere near that but the deal i got on the turbo was too good to pass up. Down the road I may buy a spare motor and build it to really turn up the boost.

Look it's my build!

Hope you get it running soon, I'd like to see what kind of gains I'll be looking at with 6-7psi.

It will, only reason mine isn't is because of murphy's law. If it can happen, it will happen.

You should have no problem though.

Quick question for anyone in the know....with the respect to fuel injectors for my build. I plan on using 42lbs injectors...likely the gm stage 2 from the ss. I plan to rewire the harness as hunterkiller laid out in his tutorial...my question is do the stg2 injectors pair up with the 2.2L fuel rail? I read something on another form saying the fuel rail from an 03 ecotec would need to be used instead..yet i havent read anything about that here..

You already put them on? I was wondering about injectors myself, i really want good idle quality and drivability with my setup whenever i get around to doing it. I was looking on zzp and most of the inj on their site say for 2.0 or 2.4, what's the difference for us 2.2 guys?

My 42# injectors did not fit with my 2.2 fuel rail. People have done it, but I don't see how without modifying the stock fuel rail. The 42s are shorter by a 1/4 inch, and do not seal off right. When I put on the lsj fuel rail it sealed so much better. Like I said, people have made it work on stock rail, but I suggest otherwise.

Plus, my fuel rail looks friggin sick.

What parts did you need to add the lsj fuel rail? just the fuel rail itself? Will it connect to the fuel line like the stocker?

Well, the fuel hose can be connected pretty easily, but the mounting bolts are not going to match up.

I had to get custom brackets made for it to mount to the head.

Downpipe

I've hit a speedbump in the part buying process...where is everyone getting their downpipes built for their turbo builds? local or online?

The local availability for custom fabrication like this isn't exactly booming where I live...I've been contacting a few online shops (clear image, synapse) about building me one...but they would need a local car to do the fitment on.

I'm hoping to be able to get someone local to clear image preferably to let them use there car for them to fab up my downpipe...anyone here local to Kent, Washington? Willing to pay a small bit for the hassle/time

Why are you going to such high dollar motorsport companies for a downpipe? Just go down to Joe's Mufflers down the street and tell him what you have. Any exhaust shop can do it easily, and much cheaper.

Because "Joe's Muffler Shop" local to me would charge me just as much as I'd pay one of the companies I listed.

I haven't gotten any quotes locally...I've been in some exhaust shops here when I had a leak in my zzp header and heard some of the quotes they gave customers for such simple exhaust repairs.....

Example: replacing/welding in a 2 foot section to a stock exhaust from a grand am that had been broken....he was told over $300 just for that. I would hate to even think what they would charge me for a custom designed downpipe WITH cat in all stainless built to my spec...id rather spend the money somewhere like clear image where I know the final product will be what I am hoping for...not having much luck though.

220? i had always though that the larger 2.2 and 2.4 could beat the 2.0 turbo?
